I just ordered a new 617 in a 4 inch barrel. I got could not find a pre lock one any where. I would like to get the 10 round speed loaders and a nice set of wood grips for it. Any suggestions on grips?.

I've got wood Hogue's on mine and I use it for bowling pin shoots, it's a blast. The DS 10-speed loaders are worth their weight in gold too, I highly recommend them! When you order some loaders make sure you order a loading block.

Thanks. Yea I will be ordering the speed loaders and blocks. I will check out the grips also. Anything in particular to look out for as far as cleaning or sighting in.

Congrats, you'll love it. I looked for a no-lock 617 for a while as well with no success, finally bought a used 4 incher with lock. The lock on the 617 doesn't bother me as the gun is strictly for target shooting. I wouldn't have a lock on a carry gun. Enjoy!

It's all about timing and location. I've been looking myself and a member on this forum had this one. We made a trade, and it worked out for the both of us. I know this has a longer barrel and is the 6 shot model, but for being 18 years old, she is so fine.

I carry a S&W lock key on my key-ring just in case I experience the dreaded unintended lock-out!! I've shot tens of thousands of rounds out of IL guns including Scandium 357 J-frames, a snubbie 44 Mag, and a brace of 500 S&W Magnums with the heaviest of loads, and have never had a problem. But I have the key with me at all times just in case!! I personally would not hesitate to use an IL gun for carry, and have done so. I think the odds of an unintended lock out are probably less than some other form of malfunction. Oops, I didn't mean to open this can of worms again..... :)

Real nice. It would be nice if they made the new ones in a square grip frame. Since they are so rare.

I bought a set of Ahrends unfinished cocobolo retro targets for my new 4" 617. I finished them with several applications of my homebrew penetrating oil/resin finish. I added a HiViz front sight and the 6 x 10 baseplate and speedloader from DS-10. Not seen - a lot of live-fire breakin and some spring changes, mainly a lighter rebound spring. Fun firearm!

Ahrends regular finish is 'brighter' - that is, it doesn't darken the ligher colors like an oil finish will. Here is my 627 Pro sporting standard factory finished Ahrends cocobolo retro targets:

I believe the Ahrends grips are still $60 + $6 s/h direct from them - and they work in an old fashioned way - they'll take your check! Nice folks.

Stainz

PS While a 4" 617 is capable of some decent bullseye shooting - I'm a plinker. Break it in with Federal 36gr HP 550 packs from WallyWorls - or splorge with Federal Automatch... no need for expensive ammo. It has a beer palate - leave the champagne for bencgrest rifles!

I bought the Ahrends retro combat. Got the oil finish. Put a set of Wolff springs in it, regular power mainspring and 14 lb rebound spring. Found the loading block and four loaders used, they are great. Very nice shooter.

Thanks stains I really like those grips I think that's the ones I will go with.
