5906 9mm 4"barrel...serial #TZT65XX

It was listed as preowned and unfired. I was hoping it came with some goodies such as the box, tools or at least the manual but no such luck. I have an XDS .45ACP but wasn't familiar with the 5906. I did some reading up on this forum and watched some YouTube videos before the purchase.

I asked the employee at my LGS to breakdown the gun because I heard there was difficulty for some people in removing the slide for cleaning. To our surprise there was powder residue by the ramp and on the barrel. So much for being unfired! We were sure that it was probably only a couple of shots fired. If it wasn't for the residue the condition could have probably been listed as nib (but without the box).

Sorry I don't have pictures yet. This gun doesn't have a scratch on it anywhere. The grips are also perfect. Can't wait to shoot it.

I have a 5906 myself, a TSW variant. I like it quite a bit & I hope you enjoy yours.

I have purchased several new pistols (Glock 27, S&W BG380, and Beretta Nano) that came with one spent shell case, and you could see evidence it had been fired because the barrel had not been cleaned. I figured this was normal, possibly final QC at the factory...

Completely normal, S&W fires but does not clean all of their firearms before they are shipped to distributors. A standard auction listing would be more correct to say "factory fired only" instead of "unfired" though as some people are unaware that S&W test fires every firearm and would have the same question you did.

Seems like I read somewhere before that the pistols with those faux woodgrain delrin grips were some type of special limited run. I believe it might be a bit later than 1989 due to the rounded trigger guard and Novak sights. That is a very nice pistol.

I agree. I love the grips. Beautiful.

Do you mind if I ask what you paid for it??
Did you only get one magazine??

Paid $500. It was a fair price to me so not complaining. Only came with one mag. I've got 5 more 15rd mags coming in the mail from Midway.

I was a little leary of the size and weight at first because I also own an XDS .45 but it should work out fine.

If you like rapid fire shooting, the 5906 is one of the best. That .45 can't touch it. Recoils like a .22. Don't listen to those dao boys. Trigger reset is amazing. Double tap accuracy.

I would guess around 1991 at the earliest, due to the round guard, as well as the flash chromed trigger and hammer, two line roll mark, and Novak sights.... I also recall that the faux grips were something limited, maybe a dealer special?

Very nice pistol - my 5906 is over 20 years old and has performed flawlessly with nothing more than post-range cleanings.

It's well beyond my comprehension or patience to figure out exactly what I have on most of my guns. I've bought 12 S&W's since early October. While I enjoy reading the S&W Catalog I'll never be the goto guy on the forum. I guess if I was more of a collector I would research each gun and print the info out.

Shooting them is more fun!

I'd never seen grips like that and am surprised how nice they look. That's a nice contrast between the grips and the silver/gray frame. That's just another thing to worry me about sprucing a gun here and there. Anyone know if they were offered on other models? If not, I supposed factory grips could be hydro'd (if that's the term.)

coltle, I think you lucked out with that one. That appears to be a stocking dealer special from about 1993. They had polished finish on the slide and frame flats and the wood grain Xenoy grips. I handled one back then, but never owned one.

BTW, every new gun I can ever recall buying, by whatever manufacturer, was test or proof fired at the factory and not cleaned....

where those wood grain look grips offered on anything else besides the 5906.......I have to admit I have never seen those before.....that 5906 looks like a different gun....nice score............................edit:..sorry tom-tom...I just seen you already asked that

I don't recall them being offered on any other guns, and can't remember if they were ever offered as a part available from the factory. I used to attend quite a few gun shows, and freqent gun shops in the big city. I never ran across that grip for sale anywhere. I have since seen S&W grips hydro-coated to resemble the factory version.
