JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT..22LR CENTERFIRE CARTRIDGE

Since this a wish list cartridge/gun thread I will add mine. I would buy in a minute a quality, very lightweight, long and graceful, walnut and steel. rifle chambered in 32ACP. Having cronographed factory 32 ACP ammo from rifle barrels the velocities approximate 1,200 fps. I could not think of a better small game/ small varmint rifle. For me anyhow.
I've thought similarly.
Only that the cartridge should be a bit longer to get up into the 1500 fps range and ease reloading.
The economy of such a cartridge to the reloader would be great.
But the problem remains that it has to survive the market.
In a recent haul of range brass, the lions share was 9mm, followed by 223.
40 and 45 had near equal representation with 38 special taking 4 th place.
Such things as the 32 or 30 super carry didn't show at all.
9mm even beat out 22 LR by a very wide margin.
It just has to place to get in the race

I like the general idea.
But, I think the cartridge should essentially be a 25 ACP caliber based magnum. Perhaps rimmed and rimless versions.

Yeah, I'd love to see some development of the 25ACP into something more potent. Longer case, more powder, as some have suggested something akin to the 22 magnum in 25 caliber.
Of course it would require a complete redesign of the 25ACP "mouse guns" we're all familiar with - with a grip frame big enough to accommodate the longer cartridge and magazine.
I'm envisioning something like a Baby Browning or even a Colt Vest Pocket with a grip frame about 1/8" wider (backstrap to front) to handle the longer cartridge and a barrel proofed to 35kPSI like a 9mm.
I would think that would get a 50gr pill zipping along at 1400 or 1500 FPS and make it into a mouse gun that roars!

The Main Thought is a 22LR cartridge, Centerfire, THE SAME SIZE, Not Bottle-Necked, can reload to suit your purposes, should be a lot of choices on the bullet sizes, and a Bonus, A Centerfire will have a lot nicer lighter trigger pull than a Rimfire for a Revolver, not my ball game, to old, but will be a light fast competition 22LR Revolver..

See post #6 above. A small pistol primer barely fits in a .25 ACP, so a straight walled .22 centerfire round would have to use a smaller primer than currently available.

It looks like to make a big advancement, and another choice of 22LR Ammo, We need a Tech at like CCI to make a smaller primer, and like the CCI Stinger with 1640 FPS has a better nickel plated case, I think it will be a little higher price than some of the 22LR Rimfire, I see that some of the good stuff is running around .20-.30 Cents a round, S&W should have no problem making something like a Model 617 22LR Revolver, just call it a 617-CF, CenterFire.. Just something to think about in these cold winter months..

It would sure take a "little bitty" primer for a centerfire cartridge the size of 22LR, it would be tough to reload.

Learned a lot in this thread. Big thank you's to the experts. Love to see if any real wildcats appear, and become popular. Myself, glad I have a convertible Single-Six, and wishing I had spare cylinders for my 617 and Single-Ten to shoot 22 WMR. It's what we have that is proven and works.
