Thank You TLay for this fine looking revolver. This one has me alittle confused. Serial number k32649x Should put it in the 1958 shipping range.Serial number stamped on the frame, grips and ejector star. Barrel and cylinder unnumbered. No model number stamping in the yoke area. Standard Catalog says stamping of the model number 1957. IMG_1167.JPG

Very nice K22....Its technically a Model 17 that didnt get stamped as such :)

It took awhile for the factory to consistently stamp model numbers. I have a K22 from 1958 that is not model marked either.

Stamping of the model number in the yoke cut was authorized by S&W on June 12, 1957, but frames already in process were not stamped retroactively. The implementation varied by model and S&W's production schedule, but took over a year to implement.

The same is true for the change to the -1 model variation and deletion of the diamond around the escutcheon and nut (as well as other changes). The date authorized and the actual implementation of a change may be months or even years apart.

Often, the SCSW only tells part of the story.

So would it be right to say that if your k22 shipped Jan 1958 or later it cannot be a pre 17? Model stamping or lack thereof means nothing?

Jeff, must have slipped my mind. I think the day I invited you over I was going to offer it to you for half price. Where have you been, you haven't posted in awhile? Mike, I may have a non number matching box, give me a call.
