Hey folks, I viewed a like new Model 17 no dash (four screw) today. It had a target hammer and walnut diamond target stocks. I don't remember the serial number but it was in the 300,000 range, I believe. As I looked on the barrel flat area (ejector cutout spot) there was clearly an "X" stamped there. What does that signify, if anything? I did not remove the stocks, as I was not looking to purchase it.

Thanks much for any and all help.

Sounds like it was a fitter's mark. Usually those are in the yoke cut and on the yoke itself. If you are actually talking about the barrel flat, that is pretty much a new one on me. A Model 17 would not (usually) have a serial number on the barrel flat, nor anything else for that matter.
