I own several and they all say 22 long rifle ctg. I'm assuming you have ne that says different?
Well I also have two and both are like yours. I saw a pic this morning that was not real clear but could make out 22 W-- CTG. I couldn't make out the other two letters but it did not say long rifle.
The gun is for sale and I cant find anything different in the S&W Standard catalog or in any pictures on the net. Hopefully I can find out something before I see the man tomorrow about buying it.

If it read "22 M.R.F. CTG." it would have been an M48 of some sort, perhaps with its auxiliary 22 LR cylinder installed. -S2

Could it have been 32 WCF CTG? aka Winchester Center Fire or later designated the 32-20.
If so it would have been pre-WWII.

What's the model number, inside the crane on the frame?

I assume this is a Model 48 but wasn't aware it was chambered in anything other than .22 MRF. Here is some information on the .22 WRF.

K386xxx would make it as shipping in 1959-60, and I have never heard of a K22 having been chambered specifically for the .22 WRF/Rem Special (but .22 WRF will chamber in the .22 WMR, as the main dimensional difference is length). Some earlier Colt Police Positive revolvers were chambered in .22 WRF, don't believe S&W ever offered anything in that caliber. I can't tell much from your pix. What's the caliber shown on the box? It could be a one-off special order. Might well be worth the cost of a letter.

Until we have better pictures of the box and caliber marking on the barrel . . . it sounds like the box is marked K22 Masterpiece (&/or Model 17) and a gunsmith has re-chambered the cylinder to accommodate the WRF cartridge, hopefully bored the barrel to .224", and marked the barrel to reflect the revised chambering.

It's very difficult to estimate the value of a modified gun (if in fact it has been modified). It's going to be valued as a shooter, not a collectible, and further, being chambered in .22 WRF will definitely not be attractive to anyone wishing to use it. That ammo is costly and difficult to find (although I think someone is now loading it). I don't think I'd want it at any price, just a personal opinion. I'd suspect that anyone interested in it would want to rechamber the cylinder to .22 WMR. NOW, if it came from the factory chambered for .22 WRF, that's a totally different story.
For the second time in two days the seller cancelled out & wouldn't give me a time when I could see the gun. So something is fishy about the whole mess.

That is most likely due to the fact that the seller is also a member of this forum and due to the comments above has realized that he has a special order gun from S&W that is worth twice what he was asking for it.
Look on GunBroker over the next few weeks for the new listing.
