I ran across a 4 screw K-38 Masterpiece for $275 at my local gun shop. It had Hogue rubber grips on it, some holster wear and a few nicks in the finish. It looked relatively unmessed with although the cylinder did not open easily. The timing was good and the trigger was excellent. When I got it home, I found the cylinder yoke screw was too long and appeared to never have been fitted properly. I did check the other frame screw to make sure someone hadn't mixed them up. It took a lot of stoning to get the cylinder to open smoothly. Also, the fourth screw (trigger stop) was loose. My first guess is that someone replaced damaged sideplate screws and didn't fit the yoke screw. Are there any other likely explanations? I find it hard to believe S&W would have let this one out and someone would have put up with it for 50 years.
