K and L frame grips- Really interchangable?

I wanted some square butt (not PCs) service grips for my 586 and tried these. They fit terribly. I would expect some minor fault but this? I never see any service grips listed as L-frame, are they somehow different?

They might be grips for the N-frame

K&L frame grips are the same. Those look like N frame grips.

Yep... your pic#2 is the classic telltale sign of a N-Frame grip on a smaller K/L Frame.

I would definitely take the gun in and show him his error, then get my money back. As the others said, those are N frame grips.

I'd keep them If there's ever a chance you'll buy a model 58 or a 520. They are much more rare I would imagine than K/L frame PC magnas

Doubtful as N's are worth considerably more

True, but I have always wondered why S&W didn't use N frame size grips for the X models.

I think it's because the grips on it are so thick. With the N frame and the grips it would be a bit of a stretch to reach the double action trigger.

Go to post #15...and #18 as well. SmithNut has posted pics that show how to ID grip size by looking at the inside. Using that method I have seen many sets mis-marked at gun shows, or for sale online.
