My 1980 made Model 14-4 has just started to give me light primer strikes. Comparison of the nose protrusion with my Model 10-6 clearly shows that the 14-4 has less.

Can anyone tell me what the maximun and minimum figures were for protrusion? Were they the same for all K frames?

Thanks
Peter

Has it had many rounds fired?

Have you measured the end shake using a feeler gauge? Measure the barrel to cylinder front face gap: first with cylinder pushed all the way to the rear, and again pushed all the way forward, the difference between the two measurements will tell you how far forward the cylinder moves when the firing pin strikes the primer.

You can also gently wedge a thin piece of wood between the lower front face of the cylinder and the cylinder window and fire a one shot single action thru each chamber. If you have no misfires the problem is excessive end play.

First make sure the mainspring tension screw in the front grip strap is cinched down tight. If it’s tight you may need a new mainspring. You can wedge a thin piece of sheet brass or a spent primer (with the anvil removed) between the screw and mainspring to increase the tension, then test fire.
