This 48-4 with optional 22 LR cylinder will be going toe to toe with my 1959 no-dash for accuracy bragging rights. It will have to perform really well to outshoot it's older brother. The picture doesn't do it justice. It's a real sweetheart.

Very nice, thanks for sharing.

Let us know how they compare. I have a 6" 48-2 that really shoots.

Are both of your 48s 8 3/8"?

I would also be interested in an accuracy comparison between the LR and magnum cylinders.

The old 48 is 8 3/8 and is scary accurate. I have a 4" and a 6" but I have not shot either. The LR side should be interesting. Can anyone tell me if the bore size is different in 17 Vs 48? Ruger did the change with the Single Six with two cylinders.

I can't speak for S&W, but Ruger has used 3 different bore sizes. 22LR: .216", 22WMR: .223", and compromise for both: .219".

FWIW, I have an M51 with both cylinders. It was unfired when I acquired It. Have not yet shot it with the LR cylinder.

Miss leading title!

Retired W4, your thread title(K22 Magnum) is very miss leading! When I seen that title, I thought "Another M 53 thread!" The caliber stamping on the barrels are, 22 Magnum (model 53 Jet) & 22 MRF CTG(model 48)! The term "Jet" came about from this confusion of terms from S&W by Remington, the designer of the cartridge.

What's confusing? "K-22" applies to the .22 caliber rimfires, the M17, M18, and M48, although the full name of the Pre-M48 is "K-22 Masterpiece Magnum Rimfire". K-22 has nothing to do with the M53, whose full name is ".22 Centerfire Magnum", or ".22 Jet".

I'm interested in seeing the comparison data between new and old, regardless of what they're called. W4, do either of your M48's have issues with unburned powder residue getting under the extractor star and causing clearance issues, making the cylinders difficult to close? I'm wondering if those carbine length :D barrels allow all the powder to burn.

My four inch 48-4 certainly had a problem with residue under the star.
It wouldn't get through a second cylinder full of rounds without binding up.

Mine, either, hence the question. I put a 1/2" trim paintbrush in my range bag to clean out under the star every time i reload. Sure glad I wouldn't use the M48 in a gunfight. :D

W4. is your 4"er a no dash? I too have a 6" 1959 vintage 48-0 and 2, 8" 48-0's. I have been looking for a few years for a 4" 48-0. Found one but it could not be transferred out of MA. Got any ideas where I might find one? Thanks, Big Larry

Big Larry, My 4" is marked 48 (no dash), BUT it is a -3, based on the position of the rear sight leaf screw, not to mention no trigger guard screw. Oh, and then there is the 5K SN. But it is marked 48. They sure don't show up around here very often. Best of luck finding that 1959 vintage 4".

My 1959.

I have not had that problem after 75 rounds of CCI. I haven't been to the range with the new one but I will report.

Here's a no dash although it has a factory re-finish from 1969; don't think its been used much since then though. Might have to shoot it one of these days. With a 22 LR cylinder. . . .

I also have an 8" M48-3 10K that was sent back to the factory and upgraded to 3 T's, RR/WO sights and a beautiful nickel finish. It was sent back 10-1982 according to the stamps on the grip frame. The cyl. and bbl. were numbered to the gun. Unfired since. Big Larry

I stated "the stamping on the barrels", not literature, instruction sheets or catalogues. The model 53 is a K frame and is 22 caliber, in fact it could be purchased with a 22 LR cylinder.
