This is a good one...I have 340MP with the lock. At first I didn't like it then I said you know I've used it a few times and it didn't bother me. I ended up misplacing my keys (luckily with the lock in the open position).

I send an email to S&W as they requested on their site due to high volume of CS calls. I get a returned email to call!!

I call and the good news is LE discount applies....4 keys, $26!! Insane! I have no problem paying to play but that right there is absurd.

I'm not a S&W basher i appreciate their quality (I have M&P Pro 9 and Pro 40 and 340MP). Just sharing some craziness.

Several years ago (perhaps 5) I bought a gun with the lock but no keys, and customer service sent me two for free. Sorry to hear they changed their policy on this.

I bought a 617 a year ago used with no keys, and when I called S&W customer service they sent me a set no charge. I bought a Remington 700 VS a couple months ago with a lock and no keys and Remington wanted $12 for a set of keys. The trigger was so bad with the lock I opted to change out the trigger and firing pin & shroud which eliminated the lock.

Ridiculous. As I see it, you have only two real choices.

#1. Get out the screwdriver and remove the storage device.
#2. Buy another Smith that comes with two keys and pirate one of them for your old gun.

I support either option!

I bought 2 500's that came with no keys, I contacted customer service through email, They said they would send me 2 keys, that was 13 days ago and still nothing. Just sent them a new email..

9 days ago I ordered a replacement box for one of the guns.. no joy there yet either.

I'm thinking I wont do much ordering from S&W in the future.

Good idea...I'll set up a WTB add.

What it does for me is ensure I would not opt to but any of their offerings with a lock! A key that costs them less than a dollar will now cost them a future sale.

Is what it is....i still love my 340pd.

It took S&W nearly 4 weeks to send me the strain screw to my 686+. Hang in there!

S&W CS and their store take a very very long time to ship (4 to 6 weeks avg), I learned this early and only order stuff from them that I don't have a deadline for. Order and forget and it'll get there before you know it.

Just curious as to how you know it's a dollar for S&W to order the keys in bulk from a vendor (I assume), have one of their employees receive and stock them, anther employee pull an order for you and mail them out? At $26.00 for 4 keys, that's $6.50 a key. Doesn't seem all that bad.

We can go so far as to extrapolate fuel cost from China as well....call it semantics call it BS whatever you wish. End of day we all know the key is of no special quality nor high cost. Lets be realistic....Home Depot can stock a more substantial key and provide more substantial labor in cutting that key to an exact copy, and maintain a machine to duplicate said key....doesn't mean the key blank is costly.

The key is cheap....it is what it is. Easy fix, I get a key at a cost I am willing to pay or I don't use it, or don't buy another product with a lock.

I'm not a S&W basher nor most other manufacturers. But your comment reaks of the koolaid. I was simply sharing what I felt was nonsense. If you feel different I respect your feeling but it isn't mine.

I like that......which brings up the question, aren't the keys all the same? I thought that they were; maybe I'm just an idiot.....but I digress.....

I am sure I have extra keys since I never use them, I just leave them in the boxes. I have a couple of IL guns that I actually purchased new so I definitely have keys. If they are interchangeable, as I thought, PM me - you can have them. For free. With my stamp on the envelope. I'm easy that way.

I purchased an IL 617 and there was no keys in the box. I stopped in the S&W range/store and asked if they had any keys and told him I didn't get any. He laughed and asked what do you need those for, I'm sure you'll never use that lock. Gave me a key anyway, and I've never used it.

Solution:
Don't lose your keys. :D

I have two keys.
They are still in the little factory baggie.
They're hanging on a nail in a spot I see every day.
I can't remember how I got them, but I think they were in a bunch of S&W 'stuff' I bought.
I don't currently have a gun with a lock, but I buy/sell a lot of guns, so I figure I need to own a key just in case.
They've been hanging there 4 or 5 years.
They'll be hanging there till I die, need them, or move. ;)
