Knock around 1911's: Remington and Ruger

I'm looking around for another 1911. Nothing fancy or super highend. I've been looking through the local gun sellers at new and used guns. I've come across two that have cought my eye.

One is the Remington 1911-R1. Kind of "Plain Jane" and striaght foward. Fit and finnish seem good (I'm no 1911 expert, ask me to look over a K frame and I'm good). Price point is good. Any body have one? Like it or hate it? I've come across a few reviews and most seem ok. I don't trust the reviews in the gun rags.

The other that has cought my eye is a Ruger SR1911. I do kind of like the mat stainless. Once again, fit and finish seem good. Price point is good. All the reviews seem to favor the arm. Any body have one? Like it or hate it?

My wife got me a Remington R1 for my birthday last year. It has been great. No problems with it and, I shoot it often. It has a 1911 Sig, Kimber, Colt, and Taurus in the safe for company. Believe it or not, I use the Taurus PT1911 at the range EVERY week. I have well over 10K rounds in the Taurus. The Remington is nice but I like the Taurus.

The Rugers are scarce as hen's teeth they say. With Ruger halting orders temporarily, the price on it may go up.

If I were to buy another 1911 it would be stainless. It would be a 4" slide version, too, but I have the standard length...

Take a good look at the R.I.A.'s, or Rock Island Armory offerings. Yes, they have VERY good write ups, you will be pleasantly surprised. Of course they are not Smith's or Kimbers or Colts or Ruger in quality, but yet almost every single report I have read on them are 100% positive. Price point's are well under what one would expect for the amount of praise they receive. My only choice for a inexpensive 1911, bar none, 26Ford.

I just bought a Ruger yesterday, they are very difficult to get right now at a reasonable price. I went into a Gander Mountain and they had one so I took it. I have not shot it yet. If you want a Remington that is featured like the Ruger, look at the enhanced version. Has the beavertail etc.

If the Ruger is actually "in stock", I would snag that! The Remington also. I like stainless but as Sip says the Rem is classic.

Can't find either around here, we are at the bottom of the food chain.

Both Remington and the Ruger are great choices at the price point they're in. AND - they're both made in the U.S.
In this area, working p/t at a large LGS like I do, I saw LOTS of interest in the 1911 last year, being the year of recognizing the 1911's 100th birthday. With that interest seemed to also be an uptick in interest in 1911 pistols made HERE.
If one is interested in getting a 1911, in part to pay homage to it's history, it just doesn't seem right to do so by grabbing an import.

Good luck with your choice. As I tell customers that are trying to decide between two quality choices - 'you're in 'can't mess up' territory'.

I went to the LGS yesterday afternoon to accompany a friend to pick up his R1. The gun was well worth the $599 + tax that he paid, gun and 2 mags. He also picked up a 17-3 in 98% for $ 550.
After looking over his gun in the car, I went back in to look at another R1 they had. It was too darn crowded so I left. People were buying everything, AK's, 15-22's-Mosins-Rem 870's, etc

26Ford, I own a RIA-Match now. Great (not pretty) hand gun. First 1911 in 20 years. I am keeping an eye open for a RIA tactical too.

I agree completely with your assessment of RIA. I use the full size Tactical as my carry pistol. It keeps company in my safe with a Springfield, Colt Systema, and a Caspian.

Good solid pistols at a reasonable price.

Sometimes you get what you pay for... sometimes you get more.

That would be the RIA Tactical. For $60 or so over the GI model you get better sights, trigger, ambi safety & beavertail.

The factory mag I got was junk & if you want to replace the sights the dovetail is not standard. But who only buys one 1911 magazine? I have no plans to replace the sights. The gun came with what I wanted.

I have several 1911s, one of which is a Ruger SR1911. I have to say, I think it is my favorite. It really is a great gun, made by a great company, and I am proud to own it! Ruger stands behind their products with great customer service.

I'd buy an import before I buy a Cerberus/Freedom Arms, even if they were the same price.

Here's my rather plain S&W1911. It doesn't have the forward slide serrations, plain gi guide rod, blued steel, wood grips and nice Novak sights. Accurate and dependable; what else do you need?

For a knock around 1911, do consider the Rock Island Armory pistols. I have found the new for $420 locally. I did a deal earlier this year trading a Glock 22 for a S&W 15-3 and a used RIA 1911-A1. Of course the 15-3 is wonderful. What surprised me was the RIA. It is well worth what it cost.
