Guys,
I know there are very different opinion on re bluing a gun. I don't want to debate them here. I am asking those that have done so with a service and are pleased with the result. I know of Ford's, but the wait is very long. Can you guys throw me some names of places you have used and are happy with? I appreciate it.

The S&W factory seems to be doing excellent work at a fair price these days , with a decent turn-around time.

I've heard the same, but they won't work on an old one(already called).

Contact Dave Chicoine at oldwestgunsmith.com who specializes in older S&W's. Outstanding work, but I'm not sure about the turn around time, anyone who does quality work will probably have a little wait time these days.

"Check with Turnbull Mfg, I have heard good things about them. See also this thread regarding Turnbull doing the finishes on the color case hardened classics for S&W."

I have e-mailed both, thanks for the tips.

Just Google on gun bluing services - there are dozens of them. Main problem is in finding one that doesn't overpolish and round off the sharp corners and dish the screw holes. The bluing process itself is very simple and about anyone can do it. The surface preparation is not, and that's what you are paying for.

Having blued a large number of handguns myself, I have achieved very good results in some cases by not polishing at all - just removal of the original bluing with phosphoric acid. That works if there are no rust freckles or scratches that must be polished out, and you don't demand a bright mirror finish. And it doesn't round any corners or blur out any stampings.

Turnbull Won't do old Smiths.

"I don't know if they do wheel guns, but they have done some rifle barrels for me several years ago and they were spectacular"
Tried them won't do revolvers

I have(Google), just don't want to go in cold without reference. One place I called said to me " do you want the hammer and trigger blued" .

Dave Chicoine was highly recommended but high priced. Probably worth every penny. Speaking of pennies, trying to keep this to $200-300.

I appreciate every recommendation and name you guys give.

He does perhaps the finest custon pistolsmithing in the US. I don't think he blues himself, but he can tell you who does a good job.

Turnbull does great work. I recommend them. But, they would not re-blue my 1973 Model 41. I wish they would! Skip48

+1 for George Roghaar, did a v nice job on a beat up 24-3, as a result I then had him do a 57 w/nice results.
George has good communication skills and uses them. Was a delightful man to deal with.
Good Luck, Kevin G
