Okay, this is a silly question, but... If I buy a kydex holster for a Shield that is designed for the Lazermax laser, it should work fine if I don't have the laser on the gun, right? I'd like to have the option of adding the Lazermax later if I want to.

I'd think the retention would be affected. Why not just make your own kydex holsters? One with and one without the laser. It's cheap and easy to do it yourself. There are plenty of tutorial vids on YouTube.

I would recommend a holster for each option (with and without laser). On the other hand, the 9mm Shield screams for a pocket holster, not a belt holster.

Take a look at Old Fashion Holsters site.

Old Faithful Holsters - The Holster Store of Most Comfortable Gun Holsters

Purchase the holster kit for your Shield without laser, and order just the Kydex Shell for the Shield with laser. The kit is $40-45 and the Shell is $15. Supplied Allen wrench, 4 screws and the swap will take 2-3 minutes. Now that's almost better than sliced bread... you think?

I favor the Old Faithful Holsters from personal experience and daily use... so this is just one good option to consider.
