I am guessing that someone has suggested this already but what about an L frame .45, 5 shot like the 696 only in .45 ACP. I'd carry that, I don't know about you other guys.

.45 wouldn't fit.

Take a look at how thin the forcing cones of 696s are and I think you'd reconsider. It looks like the L frame would require a larger barrel thread diameter, and S&W only uses one thread size per frame size.
Other wise, I like the idea. Taurus made Trackers in .45 ACP. They're the closest to what you want that I can think of. Unfortunatly, Trackers used an unusual moon clip thickness. Consequently, .45 Auto Rims won't chamber in Trackers. Also, it was hard to find the Tracker moon clips when the .45 ACPs were being made, and would likely be impossible now.

You can ask all you want but it will NEVER happen. The problem is the cylinder for the L frame is too small in diameter. If you bored it to chamber the 45 ACP the outer wall thickness of the cylinder would be about 1/32 inch thick. Don't know about you but I am not going to shoot even the low pressure 45 ACP with the chamber walls this thin, too much risk of a blowout.
