L-Frame Smiths

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I've never owned an L-Frame. Do all the recent production one have round butts?

Yes! All the new ones are round butt frames but if you prefer the square butt version, you can put the modern square butt rubber grips from Smith and Wesson on the round butt.
I know that is about as clear as mud so let me attempt to clarify.
I own the 2 1/2" version and the 4" version. I prefer the square butt grip, so I was able to find a set of Smith and Wesson rubber grips on ebay and turn the 2 1/2" into a square butt grip.

Just my opinion but I think a RB on a full size gun looks ridiculous. RB should be reserved for barrels lengths less than 4". I'm sure someone will come along with a different take but thats the way i see it

I agree. The move to round butt only is another cost savings move. I believe one day all auto pistols will have the removable plate on the slide for optics. Just makes sense although I am not a fan.

Thanks for your replies. I agree that round butts look odd on 4" and longer barrels. However, if you have small hands like me, they are helpful. I have a round butt model 60 3" that I put round to square butt grips on. The grips are Altamont super walnut.

Well, your opinion doesn't count for much, there are many of us who prefer the round butt except on target models or with 6" or longer barrels.

ANY K/L square butt grip that COVERS the backstrap can be used on the round butt guns.

Don't be sorry, that 681 pictured above is an early version of the L frame distinguished combat magnum that isn't produced anymore…I believe all the 686's are round butts now but as mentioned can be fitted with square butt style grips. The 586 may have or may be offered in their "Classic" series revolvers where I think some models were offered again with square butts. All the S&W revolver frames are only offered with round butts now though. I have a model 29 that is round butt and I found some nice round to square butt conversion grips which is to my liking. Cheers~
