L or J Frame

I have a model 4006 third generation DA/SA it is a large frame said to be built from a 9mm base I would like to go to different grips I am ask if it is a J or L frame pistol can anyone tell me which frame I have?

The J and L frame designations are for S&W revolvers.

The 3rd generation pistols were made on either "full size" or "compact" frames. Your 4006 is a full size frame, so when you shop, you can look for grips that either say they are specifically for a 4006, or that they fit the S&W full size 5900 series which is the 9MM version of the gun built on the same frame.

What Kind of grips are you looking for?

I am not sure which grips I would need. Something to help with muzzle climb.
I have large hands(xxl gloves). I would like to replace the grips myself not sure how to remove the old ones.

I wouldn't remove the old ones until you have new one to put on it, though.

If your grips have the straight backstrap, they also make a factory grip that has a curved backstrap to add some "palm swell" to the grip. People with larger hands like that. Search through this sight and you will see both.

There is a difference in auto grips between the narrow size like the 4006 and the wider ones.

They're fairly inexpensive new from S&W if you choose to go this route. Also, I believe Hogue makes some.

Whoever asks you that question is a moron, plain and simple. There is only one frame size for the 4006. J, K, L, N and X refers to revolver frame sizes, and has nothing to do with autos.
