Picked up a NIB 745 at a show today. What is the spec. ord. code mean?

It is an Adjustable Sight model. I understand they were produced in 1990.

Pro. Code 103906 Spec. Ord. 0226 Features AS

Serial TFJ 55XX Model # 7450

Very happy to find it. I love my 645, if this shoots any better, I won't believe it.

It's a Julian date (aka birthdate)

The 745 you saw was born on the 226th day of 1990. The first digit is usually the last digit of the year and the last 3 digits is which day of that year.

Hope this helps

If your 745 is like mine, you may never shoot the 645 again. As a bonus your 645 mags will run in the 745. Congratulations! bob

I love the 745

I am looking at four of the five 745's I have. Three have fixed sights, all product number 103721. The adjustable sight product number is 103906. My second adjustable sighted model originally had fixed sights, changed when returned to S&W for a comp.

Shot my first 745 over 40,000 rounds. Still has the original recoil spring. Bought my second figuring I would wear it out, like my shooting buddy with his Gold Cup. Still shoots great.

Thank you very much gentlemen, I think I am going to enjoy this one.

A Julian date...who'd a thunk it. :)

From what I could find out, that was August 14th of 1990

I have 3 of them , 2 are the IPSC specials , one is the one with no markings . I've been tempted to put an adjustable on one of them , none of the three are what I would call accurate . My 645 is more accurate than they are . But I feel with the addition of an adjustable they would prove to be accurate .

I've never seen one with the factory adjustable rear . How about a picture of one ?

I got my first 745 a bunch of years back. A previous owner put an adjustable rear sight on it. The pistol isn't built tightly. It's a blast to shoot but it isn't small-group accurate.

Later I came in to a 745 IPSC in very high condition, nearly NIB. I hoped this one would be more accurate.

I found that it didn't seem to be any more accurate than my other 745.

-UNTIL- I tried some different ammo! For the most part, I'm running Xtreme plated, either 200 or 230 grain, and the 745's don't care for these bullets. (and while I know that plated is NEVER going to be the gilt-edge Bullseye shooter's pick, my 845 and my 945's put these exact bullets in to a single hole at 15 yards from a rest.

200 grain cast lead semi wadcutter is much more accurate from the 745 IPSC! I look forward to bench resting this pistol with cast lead bullet ammo to see how much better I can expect from it.

I've posted these pictures so many times they're getting faint and worn out.

Sevens is right on about working up loads around a 200 grn cast SWC. I'm using really, (really,) hard cast's and am very happy with accuracy.

FWIW I shoot nothing but Brazos 180 grain SWC flat bottom in all my 45's, including my 745.

The 1911's, properly sprung will eat 3.5 grains of BE properly sprung. With a lower weight spring in the 745 it takes 4.0 or more of BE to properly cycle. Just this morning I ran 4.0, 4.2 and 4.5 grains of BE through her. All functioned just fine. My 745 is more accurate than I can hold it. Oh, and mine has a red dot on it. BME made me a mount for it, not a catalog item. I don't own a handgun without a red dot on it any longer. bob

ps The recoil spring I use in the 745 is SW part number 200710000.

4T5GUY , that's what I'm leaning towards having Bill put on one of mine , an LPA . It's turned them into awesome shooters . I'm not a reloader , but I'm leaning that way if this mess ever clears up , so I shoot what I can get . My PC guns really like the ammo I get from Georgia Arms , Gold dot 185gr JHP , 1100 FPS loaded in Starline brass . I'm holding on to that for when I can get in to reloading .

Excellent point, all of my shooting in my 745 is with 200 gr semi wadcutter H&G 68 cast bullets over 5.8 grains of Winchester 231, using Winchester large pistol primers. 900 fps. One hole cloverleaf groups at 50 feet.
