Labeling on food packages

I cook with Stewed tomatoes a lot. But now I have to be very careful because of all the different ways they are canned. You have Diced, diced in sauce, petite diced, steamed, no salt added, sun dried, w/onions, w/jalapenos, w/onions and jalapenos. w/basil and garlic, w/jalapenos and cilantro, and so on and so forth. Grrrrrr.

That's for darn sure...I grabbed a can of stewed tomatoes the other day to put in a meatloaf, and I didn't notice it had jalapenos in it. (I normally use the kind with bell peppers and onions added, which this had too.) Not only do I not care for hot and spicy foods, but I am very sensitive to them...almost to the point of being allergic. Ruined a good meatloaf! And with the cost of ground beef today (I use the 93/7, not the cheap stuff) that's no small loss in my house!

I'm tired of having to go to Google to figure out what some of the additives are on the food labels.

Also,,,stay away from butcher shops, that you don't see any cats loitering around out back:eek:

Dont get me started on the _____________ (fill in the blank) and missing Cats. A few years ago--they actually did shut down a Chinese restaurant that stored skinned cats in the meat freezer. That place is now back in business. What happened was the owners claimed the cats were for THEIR personal consumption. I ate there only once and years before this happened. Anyway, this place is called China Bear and is located on McKenzie and Leopard Streets in Annaville (Corpus Christi). Ill never go back there and--the only reason I went was because of being invited and I didnt have to pay for it.

I thought you were going to tell us you were using your feet to open the soup can. I was gonna say "do that man's talents ever end"?:eek::D

Cant--my toes are too stiff. :-)) I have heard from several Navy vets that the Philippinos eat with their feet which causes them to get empataigo (SP?????):confused::rolleyes::rolleyes:

How far are you from Corpus Christi? Id have gladly taken that Meatloaf off your hands and could have given you a pound of lean beef in exchange. :D

Oh, a few hundred miles...I live about 30 miles SE of Dallas. :p

BTW, I was stationed in Corpus Christi for a year when I was in the Navy, in 1970.

Hey Ringo. Did you have an urge to use the litter box later?:D

I couldnt--Shasta guards it like its her own private privy. :D Truthfully, I was in a good amount of pain cussing the paint off the walls while trying to stop the blood flooding out of my foot like a sieve and mopping up all the spillage.

I like those pull tab tops too. :D

Oh and, I forgot to add, ive been told by a few specialist medical types--that never get anything with more than five ingredients in it--be it bread, meat, whatever. I actually found some bread that had only five--was expensive--tasted good BUT, the damn stores here stopped carrying it. Grrrrrr.

A few years ago I was fishing a river near my house, that runs from the ocean to fresh water, there are a lot of house's along this river and it has always been closed to shell fishing, I saw some Chinese people shell fishing, there were three in the water and one guy on shore taking the clams and putting them in a bucket and hiding them in the woods, I called DEM, hour later still no one, so I called again, an hour later still no one, so I called again, anyway they started to pack up to leave, so I sent a kid down to let the air out of their tires, which he did, when they got back to their car they wern't going anywhere, fineally DEM showed up and arrested them, and they went to court and were fined, well anyway they owned a Chinese restaurant and they said they were only using them for personal use, Yeah right.:D

I love it when they proudly proclaim "NEW & IMPROVED"... generally that means same old stuff in a smaller container at a higher price. Also, how can something be both "new" and "improved". One or the other, but not both.

Have you noticed you one pound can of coffee, is now only 12 oz and the price is the same or higher.

A place where I like to buy my Expresso beans, same thing...I asked about why they're selling bags of coffee beans @ 12 oz instead of a full 16 oz, since they're charging the price of 16 oz.

The reply........................They can't get bags to package their beans in 16 oz.

I like to comparison shop - to calculate whether it is a better deal to buy a small at "10% off" versus a medium "15 oz at the 12 oz price", versus a large "Buy 3 get 1 free" versus an extra large at "Low, everyday regular price."

And it is not a coincidence that the small one has a shelf tag reading "cost per ounce", the medium "cost per milligram" the large "cost per serving" and the extra large "cost per each".

I whip out my iPhone calculator and do the math, slowly realizing that they are all within a tenth of a cent of being the same!

The same tactic is used when trying to compare brands.

This belongs in the OCD thread :D:D

i do this too...i am no longer allowed to go grocery shopping with my wife...it takes much longer...and the total cost is slightly higher...but we have more to show for it

While you can't get the drastic results (stores owing you money at the register) today like you used to, you can still have fun with creative shopping.

"Manufacturer" coupons can be used at any store even if they come from one of the major chains. So, hold on to them until one of your chains has a sale on the item you want. If it is a common item, stock up on coupons. Those little coupon dispensers have many. Stock up. Ads and flyers often do too -- even your local newspaper. Remember Manufacturer coupons are king.

So, you have $1 off some salad dressing. Store A frequently has it on sale for 99¢ Vola! Store owes you a penny and the dressing is free! Buy 5 and get a nickel back! Do this for several items a year and you can have fun at the register. Clerks look at you strange when you have a bag full of food and it all costs less than $1.

Meats never have coupons as a rule but, here's where it pays to be friends with your grocer. Ask them when they mark down the butcher block meats. One market has butcher block meats severely marked down just before closing time. Ribeye steaks for $2, Ground Round for $1.50, etc. They have to either throw it away or sell it and they want to get rid of it all. At around 9 PM, they put it all on a big markdown. Prices are negotiable with your grocer! Stock up!

I don't care much about labels on food regarding ingredients.I don't overdo any sweets or salty products. If it doesn't taste good what's the sense of buying it? I tried many different store brands and always go back to the name brands.

What makes me laugh is what is considered a serving.Even the starving people in Ethiopia would laugh (assuming they can read).Another pet peeve of mine is buying the large bag of potato chips that is only 1/3 full.Yeah,I know we are told that the contents settle down during shipment. If that's the case let them go around the conveyor belt a few more times and then put more in the bag!

Have you ever tried to read the label on the side of a bottle of aspirin? I'd swear they use the same label for both the 100ct and 25ct bottles. They just shrink it down to fit. It's no wonder I think I'm going blind trying to read things.

Just saying...
