LAKE CITY vs WOLF .30 CARBINE AMMO

If anybody is interested, when I was doing some Chronographing the other day I also Chronographed 10 rounds of each of the following from my M1 Carbine and here are the results:

Wolf .30 Carbine: 1870 fps (avg of 10 shots)

USGI Surplus Lake City Arsenal .30 carbine: 1980 fps (avg of 10 shots)

The published velocity as per the US Army out of the M1 carbine is 1990 fps and the 44 year old ammo I have was just about spot on where as the steel cased Wolf averaged about 120 fps slow. Now the Wolf ammo worked just fine even though is was a bit slower, and the steel cases are a little rougher on the extractor.

That is almost spot on to what I have chrono'ed as well. Aquila was even slower at an average of 1806 fps.
I have Winchester at 2006 fps, Remington at 1938 fps and Federal at 1919 fps.

I've never seen Wolf 30 carbine ammo. I didn't know it existed. Thanks for the information.

Well with six (6) types of ammo being shot..........
did any of you get one of those to work out accuracy wise in your little 30 ?

It is a slick little rifle but the iron sights and ammo that I shot, never did make it a "Shooter"......... but being just a "Stock" weapon with no work on it, it still was a lot of fun to shoot.

I found the Lake City USGI stuff to be more accurate at 50 yards and shot to POA/POI. Leaning up against a post at 50 yards I consistently shot (20 rounds) 1 1/2" groups.

The Wolf ammo functioned OK, but shot about an inch low and the groups were slightly larger (by about 1/2") than the USGI.

Unfortunately, the USGI surplus ammo is vey hard to find and not cheap anymore.

Well, I load my own. I might check it when time allows-- might be interesting.

These are actually three groups, one left, one center, one right- hand held no rest.

Interesting. I just checked my chrono notes for .30 Carbine.

My Wolf results were just about exactly the same for 3 5-shot strings:

Ave 1890 1892.6 1891.4
SD 17.77638883 21.62036077 13.04760514

What is VERY different is the LC 72 I tested was SLOWER than Wolf and well below spec (only 2 5-shot strings):

Ave 1857.2 1862.4
SD 12.07311062 13.6762568

What year was the LC ammo you were shooting?

I was shooting Lake City ammo manufactured in 1971. That's what Chronographed at 1980 (avg).
