If I had to go to Vegas, the way I would do it is, rent a car, go to Wal Mart and buy some camping gear, drive to Death Valley and camp out, return the rental car to Vegas, return the camping gear to Wal Mart and return home.

I got my rent-a-car stuck about a mile off-road about an hour east of Vegas once. I wound up walking to Callville Bay Marina and catching a cab from there back into town. Then, no tow truck company would touch it, so I rented a Jeep and my wife and I pulled it out ourselves. On the way out I bought a shovel and a tow strap from Walmart, then returned it when I was done!

I don't think the area will be recovered after the F1 fiasco even next spring, or ever recover...

Don't they plan on hosting it for the next ten years? Talk about a really good reason to stay away from the strip!

Vegas is fun every 3-4 years. Find thing to do off strip as well as some on.

F1 as an organization has proven to be utterly clueless regarding Vegas. When the race date and the fact it was to be a night race was first announced, my buddy and I looked at each other and said, "Do they know how cold it gets at night here from October on? Will they be able to get their tires to work? Who wants to sit on metal bleachers to watch a race when it could be less than 50°F".

Now I read that up until quite recently, some of the great and the good in F1 were concerned about the heat. ROFLMAO!!! The full horror is explained here.

Formula 1 Didn't Realize Las Vegas Would Be Cold In November

This could be one of the biggest sports screw ups since the Heidi Bowl.

Been to Vegas multiple times and see no reason not to go again. Love the food and the slots.

Have another trip to the big hole in the ground planned next year. Might repeat the trip of years ago from Phoenix to Sedona, to the GC, to Bryce, to Zion, to Vegas.

We got a kick out of the ride out of Sedona up to the GC, seeing the industrious Navajos peddling their wares along the way.

America is a big country, get out and see it. :)

If you are talking about Las Vegas New Mexico vs Monument Valley, Monument Valley by a small amount. If you are talking about Las Vegas Nevada, no contest, Monument Valley by a mile.
Las Vegas New Mexico is chock full of western history. Small interesting town.

Well the results are in.....

And so is Karen's input.

She does not want to revisit Las Vegas, especially on a weekend again (pity as it would have been on my birthday). She does not mind an extra night in Flagstaff but would prefer a break from all day in the car, which a trip up to Monument Valley would entail. Her choice is a half day drive to Prescott and Sedona (with a stop in Jerome) after a very leisurely start to the morning. (we are generally on the road before 8 am when travelling so a 9:30 or so start is luxury, allowing her to enjoy a full bathroom experience in the morning).

I really would have liked to get up to see Monument Valley, but not this trip it seems.

As for our second "Vegas night", well she wants to spend it in L.A.:eek::eek:

In 2018 we had two days in Houston before returning home. Last year we drove from San Antonio straight to George Bush Intercontinental in Houston. That and the flight was a bit much she says.

Personally I have no desire to spend more time in L.A., but as she is generally deferring to me with our travel plans I will give her these little wins. It will allow us to fully explore the western part of Route 66 through the city though, so maybe not a complete loss of a day.

As for Monument Valley (and a return to Vegas) I am thinking of adding one more trip to our list, sometime around the northern summer of 2027, covering Utah, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota and a few other places. Time will tell.

But hey, we never thought we'd get back to the U.S. after our 2018 trip, so never say never.

Forget the first 4. Most are filthy, crime ridden dangerous places after dark or even in the day. Route 66 sounds Very good and depending on how much one stops trip could take a while.

There are many places to visit in Northern AZ and Utah that are off the beaten path, but just as impressive as the big tourist traps... Natural Bridges, Valley of the Gods, Sunset Crater, Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef...

You can find local places to stay if you're not insistent on big brand hotels. That said, distances in the southwest are vast, so you'll be spending some time in the car if you want to see it.

I lived in 'Preskitt' for 30 years (recently relocated due to uncontrolled growth/ urbanization), and while Sedona is beautiful, I'm not a fan. Too much a tourist trap, and I guess I spent too many nights working lost (idiot) hikers there.

BTW, I try to avoid driving through Vegas, much less staying there!

When you spend your night in LA, make sure you go to Santa Monica, or better yet, stay in Santa Monica. Then you could take in the Will
Rogers museum. Bring a picnic and hang out on the grass.
Also in LA, there is the Gene Autry Museum, always worth a visit.

If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. If all day in the car is gonna be uncomfortable for her, it will be for you also. Good call on not doing Monument Valley. You wouldn't get the full enjoyment out of it. Sedona is very beautiful, though. That area has enough top level scenery, it's hard to be disappointed. Not to mention lots of gift shops and souvenir shops for quick breaks from the car.
As far as L.A., it wouldn't be my choice, but see my first sentence.:D As has been stated, there are things to do there that you can't find anywhere else. Also, on the way is Joshua Tree National Park. Another beautiful place to visit.
As far as the future trip, I hope you can do it as the states you mentioned are some of the most beautiful in the country.
