My wife and I just spent 12 days in Las Vegas. We were with a group of friends, Mark and Dayla, and Angela and her daughter Aundi. We've all travelled together before, and we all had a great time. We were in a condo about four miles south of Mandalay Bay, and I rented a mini-van to be able to shuttle everyone around. We did an amazing amount of stuff while we were there. Here's a run-down of what we did:
My wife and I had lunch at Lago, which is in the Bellagio, overlooking the fountain. It was my wife's birthday, and the weather couldn't have been nicer.
I had a day to myself before everyone else showed up, so I drove to Beatty, about 120 miles NW of Vegas. Had a nice breakfast at Mel's Diner (NOT the one from "Alice"), and photographed Rhyolite, a ghost town nearby. I'd done this before but always find it fascinating.
I went to Las Vegas Shooting Center (formerly Guns and Ammo Garage) with Angela, while my wife and Aundi were getting their hair done. Angela shot an Uzi, and I shot a Barrett .50 caliber bolt-action.
My wife, and Mark and Dayla and I drove to Lake Havasu to visit our friends Dennis and Nancy. I went rockhounding early the next morning, and then photographed the London Bridge.
After driving back, Angela, her daughter, and I saw "Love" at the Mirage. It was the 3rd time I've seen it, and they liked it as much as I did.
The next morning the three of us went hiking at Red Rock Canyon. It's one of my favorite places in the Vegas area, and they had never seen it. We saw some wild donkeys on the way home, and that was pretty cool.
That evening I went to Fremont Street with Mark, to goof off and eat a cheap prime rib dinner. He currently lives in Clearwater, Florida, but we've gone from the wilds of Alaska to the Arizona desert, and he's one of my closest friends. He and I both like Fremont Street better than the strip, and nobody else wanted to go.
I went to the gun show at the convention center. I was expecting it to be bigger, but there was also a show at Palace Station that same day. Apparently, the show I went to wasn't the big one, as I saw the entire thing several times in under three hours. No screaming deals, but I wasn't there to buy any guns anyway. Prices overall weren't quite as good as I can find around here.
Most evenings we cooked and ate together, but I still managed to eat at In-and-Out five times!
