We lost the great Walker Evans today,
He was one of the greats and I have without a doubt one of the finest memories of my Wheeling career, We had went to Las Cruces New Mexico to the Chile challenge Debbie, Kyle and myself were set up in the campgrounds directly across from these three large RV's, After a while I recognized Harold Off, He was one of my heroes or inspirations as a young reader in the magazines. His ideas and abilities were unbelievable to me, So I mustered up the courage to go over and introduce myself to Harold. We talked for 30 maybe 40 minutes and I was in heaven, Then I was needing to get back over and finish setting up the camper, Harold says come on and go with me. We walked over to one of the other RV's Pounding on the door and he says Walker get your **** out here And Oh my God! Walker Evans stepped out and I stayed right there with them till dark. I even missed my supper. They pulled out the next day and headed for the king of the hammers and I had told them I would see them out there because we were headed there also a few days later. After getting to the King of the Hammers I decided to take a drive down vendor row in my buggy when I heard somebody yelling my complete full name and I looked over to my left and there was Walker Evans and he says come sit and talk with me a while.......... Life is grand! The following year, Debbie and Kyle and I were wheeling in Clayton OK. When we came upon a friend of ours named Dan Gable And he had a group from New Mexico with him And I'll be damned if it wasn't Harold Off and his crowd And 3 of those famous narrowed blazers, For those of you that have been there the waterfall was one of the main attractions and we had a pretty good line up that thing but it was a little unnerving. Dan Gable was the only one that had gotten up it before I got there and I have the privilege of spotting all of Harold's group up the waterfall and Harold went first and was pretty unsure when he went past me I felt sorry for the steering wheel because his knuckles were completely white he had such a grip but he made it up just fine and he also made some of my greatest memories! So thank you Harold and Walker. I pray that we meet again someday.....Tom
