lasers/other lights on your weapons..

My nightstand gun has a weapon light. The other two I use mainly for home defense have night sights, one a truglo pro and the other a big dot.

I've had some low light training and I find the night sights to be valuable. Weapon light comes in real handy if I am outside at night looking for 4 legged creatures unwelcome on my property. ;)

A feral cat in particular did not like my weapon light nor the gun it was attached to one night a few months ago...:D

What is there to initiate? I just pick mine up and the laser is on by my grip. Nothing to think about, it’s like a reflex. Lasers are an advantage in almost every scenario, and if you practice with them you will see their benefits.

As you groggilly awake, try to focus and activate the grip lazer, Mr. Homeinvader is aiming at the source of that red light. If its foggy there is a nice line leading right back to you...

Doesn't make much sense. The motion cameras around the perimeter of my yard will activate my alarm, and my dog will be out of bed before I am. There is no fog in my house, or outside for that matter, and my laser is green....

I just recently started considering a WML, for my "nightstand" gun.

This thread has muddied the waters considerably for me. That said, it's been a great discussion.

My assessments of potential threats range from a toddler crawling through our dog door (most likely) to a full blown assault by determined home invaders ( least plausible).

We do have motion sensor lights, so I'm thinking I may not need a WML...

To me lasers are a fun thing to have on a gun for entertainment value, and they do help a person aim their pistol without using their sights. What I don't like about them is that they give away your position, like a little beacon that says 'here I am shoot me'. I have a Kahr PM9 with night sights that I prefer over a laser. A self defense gun should be as simple and reliable to operate as can be, and concerning myself about activating a laser on or off the tracks from what I should be thinking about.

I have owned more handguns over the years that I can even remember and never had any device added to them, never had an occasion to need one either. Recently bought a 38 Bodyguard with a lazer, jury is still out on whether or not I will ever use it other than to use it at the range to get used to how it works. In a home invasion scenario in the middle of the night I really doubt I would have the time to initiate it.

Good point for discussion.

For those who might think they'd be hard-pressed for time to activate a button on a laser... think about lying in bed and trying to gain control of a gun and a separate flashlight with two hands and activate the flashlight.

One of the things I like about my truck gun having a WML is keeping it on the nightstand when traveling away from home. If an intruder comes through the door of a motel room how much time ya got when they are just a couple steps away? Grabbing my Glock from the nightstand with one hand and activating the momentary paddle switch on the light is one simple and fast motion.

WML is a Surfire XC1. No matter where the gun is pointed the entire area will be sufficiently illuminated to identify an intruder as a threat or not. Someone earlier suggested that with a WML the muzzle must be pointed at the person to identify friend or foe. That's not true inside the home or in a room. Inside a warehouse at distance, yes.

And of course I always have some type of hand held light at the ready for tasks like finding the HDMI slot on the back of the TV and other things my tired old eyes struggle with....

I can see quite well at night time in my house without a flashlight. It's not like it's pitch black and you can't see anything, you have all the different nighttime light sources Illuminating the house, dimly I might add. I live alone so nobody better be in the house. Turning on a flashlight makes a big statement saying "here I am shoot me" .
