Time for an expert.
In the meanwhile, it sure looks like a Double Action First Model .38 as made only in 1880, only 4000 built; see the square sideplate.
Unfortunately I think it has been replated, S&W does not nickel plate hammers and triggers, or even the separate trigger guard of guns like this. That is going to hurt the value of an uncommon gun and I am not going to guess a dollar number.

I think Jim called it. With some transcription errors, those are the patent dates seen on the .38 DA first models. The dates varied slightly in later models and the contemporary .32 Double Action revolvers, whose first model is even scarcer than the .38 DA First Model (only 30 made).

Even though refinished, the gun probably still has some collector value because of its scarcity. I also hesitate to put a price on it but will make a guess just to get a conversation going. If we take "refinished" to be the same as poor to fair condition, and with an eye to the now aging prices quoted in the SCSW Third Edition, it might be a $200-300 gun.
