I know this has been brought up before . I need some input on this mater.

on your slide lock lever...

does it have spring tension on the plunger?

with a field stipped gun, and the slide lock lever installed, does it spring downward or move freely upward???

does the inside portion of the slide lock lever (the nub inside that is actuated by the mag follower) does it have heavy copper tracks indicating contact with feeding rounds???

I will take a look at this .It may move about kind of freely . The gun is a newer tactical 4046 with the flat black slide release. I will give it look over and let you know what I see

Their are know copper tracks at all on that knub that you refer to .

Also the slide release moves free .Their is not a lot off force from that little bent spring clip pushing on it .

FWIW, I have a 4006 (1992 vintage) that would do this once in every 2 or 3 magazines, not often, but bothersome. It turned out that the factory had installed the wrong slide stop plunger spring (hey, mistakes happen). The plunger was like mush.

I checked the S&W parts list for the 4006 to obtain the part number of the proper plunger spring. I had a couple already in my parts kit. The one that I took out of the pistol wasn't even close in terms of length and gauge of wire. With the proper plunger spring installed, the problem disappeared and has never returned, at least in the 400 to 500 rounds fired since the switch.

Good luck,

Denver Dick I think you may be on to this ..Every thing ealse is right new mags late gun like new no thumb in the way thanks

how about your side plate??

bent??

if the spring is the culprit, make sure you order a few with a few detents...

as they can sometimes disappear when they go flying!

That's great advice. In my parts kit, I keep at least two of each of the various little springs, plungers and such that like to go into orbit if given a chance to do so.

By the way, on that issue about of copper tracks on the end of the finger of the slide stop, look very closely. I use a 10x loupe for that kind of examination. I have a 1006 on which the finger was being "brushed" upward by the ogive of the seventh round (out of 9) on occasion. A little stoning, followed by polishing of the tip of the finger took care of the problem (perfect function/operation for the last 300 + rounds). When doing this type of operation, however, one must be conscious of the fact that the finger must positively engage the follower so as to stop the slide at the proper time.
