Late production 3913 triggers.

Over the last few months I've picked up two examples of late production 3913's. These were former CA DOC LE trade ins. Both in very good condition with very little signs of use. Both made after the "official" end of production in 2000. TDS and TDT serial prefixes.

In shooting them alongside an early production 3913 with flash chromed hammer and trigger and a 3914 I've noticed a distinct difference in the actions.

While the well used early 3913 has a very smooth DA pull, it is longer than the DA pull on the 2000 versions. The 2000 versions have just as smooth a DA pull but it is distinctly short. Short as in when you put your finger on the trigger and begin your press, the hammer is moving and you are about to trigger the shot. I really like it.

The 2000 versions SA pulls are practically identical and also identical to the earlier guns. Very crisp, fairly light.

So was anything done to the trigger geometry of later production, pre TSW 3913's? Is it a matter of a different hammer spring? Being CA DOC LE guns were they given a little more attention than non LE guns? Anyone have a similar experience? Regards 18DAI

Hi Lost Lake. Yes, these were made as part of an evidently large order for the California Department of Corrections. They were carried by Probation officers and Agents. TDS dates to April 2000 and TDT to October 2000 according to S&W CS.

I posted more about them in response to an inquiry you made in mbliss57 "ANIB 3913" thread. I guess you missed it.

I had BO157 (given to a friend who needed it) and have BO316 in my holster. Which number does yours have if you don't mind my asking? Regards 18DAI

The introduction of MIM parts, as well as some manufacturing improvements of other parts (such as the drawbar), gave the newer production 3rd gen guns gradually improving triggers.

Besides some improved manufacturing, many newer production parts also benefited from being made to closer tolerances.

This is why if I ever have the opportunity to pick up a used 6906 (because I put a few tens of thousands of rounds through issued 6906's ), I'd prefer it to be a late production version, incorporating some of the manufacturing and materials improvements. The ones I used were made during the first couple years of 3rd gen production, and they worked well, but someday I'd like to have a late production one.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'BO***' I have no numbers on mine besides the serial # TDT3786 and the model # 3913. Mine has no marks other than those. I have posted pictures of it here.... I'll post another below.

Lost Lake, the CA DOC 3913's have two letters and three number inventory numbers laser etched on the barrel, frame and slide. All I've seen start with BO then the three numbers.

If yours has no markings whatsoever, you may just have one of the overuns from that order. Yours looks to be in remarkably good condition. My TDT serial is TDT1101. Regards 18DAI

I went back and read the NIB 3913 post and mbliss57 said my 3913 would be an early model, while you said it would be a late model.

Maybe I have to call S&W and see. I posted pics of mine in the NIN 3913 thread also. Maybe I have a later one without the BO# thing.

Yes, a quick call to S&W CS and telling them your serial number will get you the year, and most times the month, that your gun shipped. Rarely, you will get a rep who will include some other details too. Good luck!

I called S&W and found out my 3913 was made May 8, 2000 and shipped a month later to the Maine State Prison for a guard to use.

How cool is that???

My 4513TSW is almost 3 years older (8-7-97) and has a MIM hammer. I wonder if the Maine State Prison ordered my 3913 with a forged hammer?

This gun family tree thing can be addicting too!

Edited to add: OK, it was BO152 not 157. I evidently have sloppy handwriting. I called the guy to tell him he owed me $475 and he assures me that TDS9085 BO152 is still in his holster.

And that kind of thing is really starting to intrigue me. I have an 'early serial number (which isn't because it was reserved) then I have forged parts when MIM was the norm. These guns are just very unique, and finding these special ones is a blast!

Somehow I missed this thread earlier. I have TDT11xx with inventory number BO328.

I bought this over the summer from a private party. It looks like it was never issued or maybe just very well cared for.
