Laura!!

Praying for all those good folks in the Vinton area where I did disaster relief work a few years ago following bad flooding. Looks like they are in the bullseye for Laura.

Robspeire—dumb question—how can any shelter protect you from 20 plus feet of water from the storm surge? Maybe they are water proof?

They will not protect against a storm surge. If the house is built on pilings high enough so the surge does not breach the house they will protect depending on the construction or building department spec's.
This is what the surge did in Mexico Beach Fla. We installed shutters there before that storm. .

Alot of changes in building code after that.
The surge from Laura will be higher which is why I mentioned
Fredericksburg and leaving. The surge will be HIGHER than the one that hit Mexico Beach Fla.

Code changes are a good thing. When I had a new roof put on they had to re nail all the plywood. I guess the code in 2004 was each nail was 8" apart. Now it's 6 inches.

Nice having the hurricane post for my garage door too.

This storm is gonna be a monster. Hope everyone makes it thru OK.

As far as shelters...didn't the weather channel gang take shelter in a vet nursing home 36 foot above sea level during Katrina?

I remember they had to move everyone off the first floor due to flooding, and there cars were under water in the parking lot.

I will be watching from an area that has no idea what extreme weather looks like.
My heart goes out to those of you in the impact area. Be safe and take care of each other.

Well, 12:30 AM here by Loreauville LA and so far it's not been too bad, But we are getting some bands coming through right now but nothing too bad. Maybe 30-40 mph gusts so far.

I sure hope damages are limited but some folks are being hammered.
My parents learned a lesson when they relocated from south Fla. to western NC and Opal came from the Gulf and turned right. The rain that led the storm for a hundred plus miles softened the ground enough so when the tropical wind gusts moved through all kinds of trees went down. Dad cleared the drive but the one power line to their little patch of mountainside took a while to be fixed.

I too pray that everyone she threatens will come out okay. We are far enough inland that hopefully we don't get hammered too bad. We have friends not far from you in Friendswood...hang on sir the ride may get bumpy.

Hopefully you are doing well, Friendswood is just fine, we didn't even get a drop of rain and very little wind.

Well, we had a good exercise on preparation. Nothing much here in my portion of East Texas.
Seems the damage was mostly in a pretty narrow area around fifty miles of the center.
Hope and prayers for all you Louisiana boys.

A last minute juke to the east spared my area. Not one drop of rain, if we had any tidal surge at all it never had any effect this far inland and we barely got enough wind to fly a kite.

Prayers continue for all those in the path. It's a horrible situation. I was disappointed to see Jim Cantore still at it. I was hoping something had blown or washed him away by now. I watched him for a few minutes to see if a palm tree or other large object would take him out. I finally had to move on. What a pompous idiot.

I just saw some drone/helicopter video from Cameron. It's been pretty much wiped off the map. There was a shot of some homes on stilts still standing, but the roofs were gone. Inundation looked complete in most shots.

Checking back in finally. About 25 minutes after my last post the power went out. And it's still out for some reason. I am operating off a new Generac generator I ended up buying from Lowes yesterday after my 28 year old gennie gave me problems again. We don't have AC, but do have tv and now, internet. It was just a matter of finding enough extension cords to get everything back up. No AC though; generator ain't big enough to power up a 4 ton unit.

We went driving around a little while ago trying to find a reason why third world power and light (otherwise known as Cleco) hasn't gotten us power yet. There was a broken pole about 1/2 mile from the house yesterday, but they changed that out by yesterday afternoon. Other than that, we haven't seen anything badly torn up around the house. When we went to New Iberia yesterday to buy the generator we saw a few trees down and maybe 3-4 other broken power poles. All I have left to do around the house is do some cleanup work, picking up small broken branches and such.

You should look into a generator lock out switch.

I had one installed a couple years ago, even thou I've never used my generator.

It's set up so you have to shut off the main's coming into your house before you can move the lock out switch up to turn on the generator breaker.

Then just plug one 220 extension cord into your gen and the other into the box below your breaker box. A lot of people have the generator plug in mounted outside. My breaker box is only about 3 foot from my garage door, so I had it mounted inside.

After he installed it we shut off all my breakers, then turned on all the single pole breakers back on. Everything in the house worked except the stove and AC.

I think it cost around $400 including a 20' 220 cord.
