Law Enforcement & The M&P

#3 on reasons I won't buy a glock is...glock owners.

Glock and M&P owner here and I take offense to your lame comment...the M&P line would not have even evolved if not for Glocks (check our their SVDE9, it is a Glock clone and Smith pays Glock a royalty for everyone made)...:p

well right before I retired after 27 years AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT issued us the 40 full size m&p's I carried mine with a tlr tack light before this I carried a colt 1911 gold cup, I wanted to hate the smith BUT its half the weight and twice tha rounds, tac light... fit my hand like a glove come to find out liked it so much I bought it when I retired its even marked AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT on the frame from smith

I used packing tape in class that day....easy to take off and no cleaning anything off the lens......:)

Oh...and I order a backstrap from Chris Damato...well worth 15 bucks shipped since I didn't want to alter any of my original equipment....the S pattern looks nice and feels great.

Neat backstrap. May have to get one of those.

FYI, for those with WMLs (a good idea, and something I would have if I were to return to field LE), there is a good article about them in the most recent issue of SWAT.

The New Hampshire State Police and Highway Patrol adopted the M&P45, in 2007 I think.

My local PD just changed over to the M&P 40. Most of the officers like it better than the Glock. Time will tell which is the better weapon. I have one and like it quite well. It carrys easy and fires every time I pull the trigger. And I hit what I am shooting at. It did not have the best accuracy right out of the box but after about 300 rds. it seated in nicely and the accuracy was 100% better. It is now my daily carry weapon. I just wish that they were being made when I was in Law Enforcement. Then I carried a M29 and never felt under gunned.

M&P accuracy an issue

I find this in at least the full M&P 9 version to have accuracy issues relative to nearly any other pistol I have shot/owned and friends found same to be true. Some have traded them in for other pistols after lack of concern on S&W's part. I kept both of mine but if my life depends on it I'm grabbing my other guns first of course.. They are nice looking and have a great feel to them.

m&p for 222 officers

I have carried a M&P 40 along with the 222 other officers in my state unit and we have experienced very few if any problems. The 40 has proven to be accurate and trouble free. I personally own the Pro edition in 4.25 inch in 40, the 5 inch version in both 9mm and 40, the 45 in 4.25 and a non pro version in both 40 and 9mm. I also have 4 different models of Glocks and I feel the M&P is a superior firearm as do most of the officers in my dept. This is not to take anything away from Glock, FN, CZ or any other firearm.

I've had several different variations of the M&P line; currently I have a 4" M&P .45, and a FS 9 that I used to complete the range portion of Massad Ayoob's MAG 40 course. I qualified with a 299/300 (the one miss was my own fault) so to say the 9mm is inaccurate is, well, inaccurate. I trust my life to my M&Ps, including my .40 Shield that I carry almost daily.

The Cincinnati Police Department was one of the first agencies to go with the M&P9. After 6.5-7 years, transitioned to new M&P9's. Yes there some issues initially, but S&W took care of us. At the time of the transition form the 5946 to the M&9, we had about 1,150 officers in the agency with the M&P. Currently we are down to about 950.

Our original guns didn't have accuracy issues. Our new guns were made in the first part of this year, and there isn't an accuracy issue with these either.

The triggers could be better. Yes an Apex sear will improve things a lot. I have Apex sears in personally owned guns. I don't shoot to reset, so the lame reset isn't an issue for me.

What we haven't seen over the years is a pattern of reoccurring issues with the pistol.

For a general issue pistol, the M&P has a lot to offer. Would I " Bet my life" on the M&P 9mm? I would, and I have...

That screen name, the location ... wow. Jeez, first Pat (just by fluke, and he has little presence here), then Malpaso, now you? Small world.
