Guys,

I have an M&P 22 right now and I'll probably be getting a .45 here real soon, either the M&P 45 or the Glock 30.

I know for a self defense round, I need to be loading the magazine with jacked hollow point rounds (and I'm willing to pay the money for good rounds). However, what do you guys shoot for practice at the range that doesn't break the bank? Do you guys shoot full metal jacket rounds? What kind of price do you look to pay for practice rounds? Are we talking about 50 cents a piece?

Thanks.

I bought box of 50 Aguila 45auto at a local gun shop yesterday for $22 incl tax. I plan to use them to break in my new XDs. I've never used this brand before, but that's what they had. Works out to 44 cents each.

If you don't mind, let me know what you think of the XDs. Overall I like how the gun feels, but I've never shot it, and I'm not liking the 5+1 round capacity.

I'd go with the M&P45 as the 22 will be a great trainer.

I shoot Federal bulk packs from Walmart ... At $30/100 its hard to beat

I have a Glock Model 30. Fairly accurate for such a short barrel. It is quite a heavy handgun when fully loaded.
I also use the 100 round white bulk packs from wallymart. They are currently hard find ..

I have both the xDS and a Glock 30 Do you have any other Glocks? The grip angle is a bit different

The xDs is a fantastic weapon. I love the size and the way it shoots. The trigger pull is nice and crisp and it is way more accurate than it should be for a weapon that size

You say your not crazy about 5+1? If you want a very concealable .45 (better than the Shield IMO and yes I have 2 Shields) your going to be hard pressed to find another with more capacity. I think a better comparison would be a G36 than a 30. The xDs is a lot smaller than either. 6 rounds loaded and carrying an additional mag of 7 isn't too shabby.

It shoots very well for its size. Very manageable and I prefer shooting it over the flip of my Shield 40

I don't have any other Glocks, but I have shot the Glock 30 and generally loved it. I actually prefer a slightly larger grip when I'm shooting larger caliber guns. I've just held the XDs in my hands - I've also shot the Glock 36 and it was a little small for me - was awkward with my pinky finger and wrapping it below the end of the grip. Maybe I just wasn't using the right form, not sure.

I really need to shoot it to know for sure, but my local gun range doesn't have one available to rent.

Use Ammoseek.com to see what mail order 45 ammunition is going for. I recently picked up some Remington UMC 250 round at $0.40 per round. At LGS, they have American Eagle at same $0.40 per round.

Less expensive is to reload your own ... IF you can find primers and powder. Brass and bullets are more easily available.

Target ammo, 5¢ per round

Bob's Bullets, located in the laundry room, has most center fire target handgun ammo for about a nickel a round. Prices will go up when he runs out of Bush primers ($14 / thousand) and Clinton powder ($13 / pound).

See you really can save money casting bullets and reloading ammo if you can find cheap scrap lead, and any powder or primers. Sportsmen's Warehouse in Columbia, SC had Federal magnum large pistol primers for $33 / thousand. Four boxes were on the shelf at 3:30 PM -- too expensive for me. :D

Just picked up (January 28th) two boxes of Federal Champion 230gr FMJ 100 count boxes for 32.17 each. It was $29.97 a month ago. That is a little over .33 cents each, including tax. I try to always buy the Federal Champion in all calibers, for my guns. I find it is clean burning, consistent, and I never have light hits or jams. Feeds and ejects perfect, and by the way it is cheap. I now have to get to the store very early, or it's all gone. They don't get regular deliveries of ammo, since the Sandy Hook incident, and when they do get ammo, they get much small quantities.

40 S&W is $27.97 for 100

9mm is $24.47 for 100

Winchester WB 9mm is $24.47 for 100

I have been reloading a long time 1970 and now seems a very good time to start initial expense manual $29 is a must press , dies and scale seem steep but you can reload at a fraction of the cost and add calibres as you go. I bought last primers at $35 /1000 $47/500 200 gr cast bullets, $17 pound of bullseye dies are $40 press for single stage look at gun show or under $100 it will let you shoot chaply and become better shot I am an addict to reloading and shooting 100+ rnds every weekend with wife and kids and grandkids I started out buying 100 primers and getting cases at the range good luck and good shooting

If you don't like how your pinky wraps under the 36 you probably won't like the xDs then as I have to also wrap my pinky under with the 5 rounder. I don't mind it though

With a Pearce extension or using the 7 rounders that solves that issue

Don't get me wrong, the G30 is a great gun....I just love the xDs...hopefully you get to shoot one. Have you been over to xdtalk.com? Lots of great info there

Walmart stock theirs shelves between 8-9pm here and my wife stops by on her way home just about every night to see what they have so I get lucky sometimes

Federal Bulk at Walmart- $30/100rds

Yep that's what I found to be the best deal. Of course now you can't find them at Walmarts around here. Luckily I got a decent stash.

The buying a box (at least) of some caliber ammo over the last couple of years has proven to be a blessing for me. I also tried when possible to replace what I shot at the range on the way home if I had the funds as well.

Just keep your eye on Walmart shelves through out the week if you can. Also keep checking online sites daily.

I picked up a 100 round box of wwb 230gr. FMJ at wally world for 40.00 two days ago.

First, thanks everyone for your feedback. I am looking into reloading in the future, but in the meantime, looks like about 30-cents a round is the cheapest I'll find. That's cool.

That's what I'm figuring. Maybe if I start shooting with it, I'll get used to it - and the mag extension will definitely help that like you said. Will check out the xdtalk.com forums, thanks.
