Just inherited a 5" 27-2 with original box and papers. It's a work of art and deserves equally beautiful leather. Thinking maybe a cross-draw rig or even a full cartridge loop belt. Suggestions?

That's really nice. Here's my 5" 27-2.

This is the only holster I have for it. This is the holster my brother carried it in when he was in LE.

He only carried in on special occasions like when he was assigned to help the Secret Service when President Reagan visited Salt Lake City years ago.

EDIT:

I got to looking at your's and it looks like its a 3T so I got mine out to look and ended up replacing the stocks with these smooth Combat stocks.

It looks like I'm going to have to hunt down a set of Football Targets for mine.

Personally I wouldn't put that gun in a holster. I would want to preserve the bluing.

I'm thinking more like a nice padded case so I could take it to the range occasionally :)

Reminds me of those folks that put clear plastic seat covers on their new cars back in the 50s, to keep them nice for the next owner.

I like the shoulder holsters more comfortable in the car too. I prefer safari land or bianchi suede lined only. It won't hurt the bluing.

It's pretty hard to find a Safariland holster, either a model 25 or 29, for a 5 inch N frame. They have not made them in years, so ebay or Gunbroker is a good place to start. I personally like the Safariland because of the sight track. You might have to go the custom route.

Gotta appreciate the balance of elegance and utility the 5" 27 brings to the game.
Hmm
Perhaps I need to look for some fancy leather...

Probably a 5.5"/6" holster?

There are several good holster makers who are members here on the
S&W Forum. I have holsters from 3 of them, and would highly recommend
any/all of them.
Red Nichols @ Red Nichols Holsters
Mike Barranti @ Barranti Leather
David Keith @ Red River Custom
1 important suggestion: Order your belt with the holster. Otherwise it
is extremely difficult to get the belt color to match the holster color.
(I have learned that the hard way.)

Some of the custom floral carved rigs can set you back $400 or more. They're beautiful, but consider a Kramer scabbard if you're looking for quality that's a bit more low-key. You can pair it with a quality gun belt and keep the total cost around $200.

Used holster can be a great value, but finding one for a traditional 5" N frame will be difficult. It will be much easier if you can live with a 6" holster.

Bob Mernickle (Mernickle Holsters in Nevada) made a very nice carved crossdraw holster for my S&W .44HE (W&K Model of 1926). Prices are reasonable and work is outstanding.

That's a beautiful holster.

If you don't mind a used holster, there can be some dandies out there. Here is one from SD Myres Co in El Paso, TX. The machines and patterns were bought by El Paso Saddlery who is currently in business and making some nice holsters as well.

I got lucky with this one.....

That appears to be a Safariland M-29, basket weave. I carried both K and N framed guns in those for years and loved the design.

I don't suggest a cross draw rig. You'll probably hit your left elbow on the gun lot and it'll seem in the way.

El Paso Saddlery makes a near duplicate of the discontinued M-29, called Model 2. They 'll aso fix you up with a fine belt and ammo case. I like the holster to be lined which is easier on the gun's finish. And I like the basket weave look.

I'd change the large S&W target stocks for something trimmer. I used Pachmayr Presentations on my M-27's. A custom set of Ropers or wooden copy of Uncle Mike's stocks would also be ideal.
