Bonded is a VERY thin layer of leather bonded to a cloth like backing. Its durability is quite poor in comparison to "real" leather. Its only advantage is a much lower cost.
I know several people who bought bonded leather sofas. They all wish they hadn't after it started peeling off.

Right now I'm sitting on a real leather couch that's almost 20 years old, and it still looks and feels like new. There is a reason that real leather costs more at the time of purchase. But for the long haul it's a smart investment.
Ron there are also many types of real leather. Full grain and top grain are the best. Lower quality leathers are split and then coated with a synthetic coating that will wear off in a year or two, not recommended if you have dogs.
I'm sitting in a Bonded Leather Chair as I type and I'm sure glad Someone gave it to Me because I would be kicking Myself if I bought it.About half the Leather has come off and it looks like it has Mange.
I had a real Leather Couch I bought back in 2010 and My Son has it now and it still looks great except where the Dog chewed it.

Real leather can easily be ruined by pet claws and kids metal clothes. Better off with cheaper or stainless steel sofa until kids leave for good and pets are not able to get in same room with couch. Best regards.

Real leather is slippery no matter what clothes you wear and you stick to the leather when your naked. Truth.

About ten years ago, my wife and I bought a beautiful four-piece sectional which turned out to be bonded leather, a thin leather veneer glued to a fairly strong backing cloth. Within two or three years, the leather started to crack and peel at all points of stress.
We've retired the sofa to our basement home entertainment center and we acquired new, cloth sofas for our living room. No more leather of any kind for us.

Once upon a time I mistakenly thought I wanted a set of leather furniture for our living room...I bought the best, and I soon got over it. Leather is not warm and you just cannot snuggle up with a blanket and relax to watch TV on a cold bitter winter night on a leather couch no matter what grade of leather it's covered with. It is sticky in the summer. The other issue is that it will stain, and when it does that's it...what you see is what you got. We tried to have it repaired or stained out and nothing works. Still to this day don't know what the kid spilled on it, but it wasn't rare or special as our then 5 year old did it.

Right now my two COLLIES are sacked out on my good leather couch. After years of this harsh and careless treatment? Nothing, not a scratch, tear, only a slight haze of breath slobber on the arms...
