Saw on the news the survivors of the founder of the band Spirit are suing the surviving members of Led Zeppelin for plagiarism. Seems they claim their song Taurus was what they got it from. I went on YouTube and listened to Taurus. Darned if it ain't the same tune as the beginning of Stairway. Even Missus Fan agreed.

Wonder if they will be successful.

I should join the lawsuit. I actually came up with the line "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, it's just a spring clean for the May Queen".:D
It was in one of my more creative periods, when I was about 6 years old.

I didn't much like "Led Z" in '71 and still don't. "Spirit"? Never heard of 'em. Let the old farts go at each other with their canes.

Spirit had some pretty good music.I had The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus album. I still have it on cd. Good music.

Zep has been accused of/sued for plagiarism numerous times over the years. Listening carefully to the scope of their recorded efforts, the band was quite generous in "borrowing" from other artists.

I believe there are several youtube "side-by-side" examples of Zep riffs/songs and the artists the band purported stole from. Interesting stuff.

I saw LZ perform that live in my youth. They did a better job with a lot less people. I miss the twin neck guitar. Years later I got a bit creeped out when I learned that they had purchased Alistair Crowleys castle to "connect with the spirits".

I had tickets in pocket to Zeppelins concert when John Bonham died.. damn!

And I love Randy California and company!

That's pretty cool...I wonder if he uses standard tuning or what?

Led Zeppelin was pretty notorious for borrowing riffs and melodies. Led Zeppelins first US tour was opening for Spirit, so...

Over the years, the writer of the ripped off song was magnanimous about the whole thing. Interesting blog about it below. I guess now that he is gone, the family has decided to get him some recognition and some cash in their pocket.

Led Zeppelin: Plagiarism? ?Stairway to Heaven? | Turn Me On, Dead Man

I don't like Led Zeppelin for a number of reasons, including the fact they stole Dazed And Confused from another artist. Lots of artists pilfer music. It's really common. But Led Zeppelin became notorious for it. There's lots of information outs there on it, but they're such a popular band that it doesn't seem to mar their reputation.

I suppose it doesn't help that I absolutely despise classic rock. Ugh.

Interesting thread. I was listening to an old Howard Stern show on Sirius today (don't judge me...), and he was interviewing an author/rock music historian that wrote a book on this very subject of LZ blatantly ripping off other song writers. They played side-by-side recordings, and there is no doubt they have directly plagiarized a bunch of people, and did not give writing credit/money to the original song writers. In the creative arts world, this is very bad form.

The author tied all but on of the songs from LZ1 to other artists, and LZ never credited any of them at the time. There have been subsequent lawsuits and awards. I still think LZ is a kick *** band, but I lost a lot of respect for them after hearing all of this. But hey, it's only rock and roll, and I like it...
