Lee Classic Turret Press Upgrade - Case Ejector

I wish the guy had come back and answered some of the questions left. I can't tell what die body he was using for the bullet feeder and what he used for the ejector.

IMHO, The case ejector has merit but I'm skeptical of the bullet feeder and (old Lyman style) primer feed " Upgrades". The bullet feed ( even if 100% reliable) is going to need refill every 10-20 rounds or so. That's going to slow you down and break your rhythm. Along those same lines, the primer reserve on a traditional (and very reliable) Lee Safety Prime will hold more and refill quicker. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" :-)

RCBS makes a bullet feeder die with tubes to hold 20-25 bullets. I bought one for .38 special but haven't tried it yet. It wasn't very expensive at about $25 from Midway. Of course, all the other calibers I ordered were back ordered. As soon as I set my press up for .38 and try the unit I'll report back. AND, where do you buy that loaded round ejector anyway?
thanks,
Stu

Here's a link for the ejector.

Case Ejector for Lee Classic Turret Press - Tactical-Arms

I'm still trimming my way through .223 cases and some more case prep. Once it's ready I will work out how this contraption works and post of a video.

On a side note, I have a friend that made a case kicker for a single stage and it's kicking my butt. If I can figure what I'm doing wrong then I will have a video of that as well.

OK, huge duh on my part. I need to find some more channel to mount a box for them to fall into when ejected. I started fiddling with this gizmo and it's a little hard to setup everything when the cases are falling onto the floor... (facepalm)

For those who are experienced it would be nice to have a step by step video on this and the bullet feeder set up and thus explaining how he did the bullet seat/crimp in one die.

Just a thought or a challenge :)

Jim

The bullet feeder is someone else's challenge. This little spring gizmo is a big enough headache so far. The adjustments on it are so minute.

Since 99% of what I shoot is lead I have little interest in a bullet feeder. But in the interest of at least trying a tiny bit I dug up these videos from YouTube:

RCBS:

Can RCBS bullet feeder die work with lead bullets.wmv - YouTube

Hornady:

Part 1 of 3 How to customize Hornady bullet feeding die for lead bullets and custom feeding tube.MPG - YouTube

Part 2 of 3 How to customize Hornady bullet feeding die for lead bullets and custom feeding tube.MPG - YouTube

Since there isn't a system that will work with the lead bullets in the sorter bowl that feeds the tubes I'm not sure this is worth the effort. This would boil down to the same issue as hen pecking the primers for primer tubes. However, if you use plated or jacketed then I think the Hornady system is top notch.

As a side note, I think the "Mr. Bullet Feeder" system is still the only one that does rifle bullets but I keep reading that Hornady is about to release one of their own. But I've been reading that for over a year now.

That's it. I give up on this thing.

Because the shell holder has to be placed so that the spring will eject the case it means you have to insert the next case backwards. This has me over and over having to correct the case so it lines up with the primer. Add to that as you feed in the next case you have to either gently push the spring out of the way or slightly raise up the ram. I could put up with the PITA of it but not the priming issue.

Moving on from that... Each time you raise the ram all the way up the collar that the spring rides barely has enough room for clearance but the spring is getting bent downward each time. I haven't loaded a hundred cartridges yet and the spring already has a downward bend that now has to ride up over the shell holder each time. It's so bad when the ram is raised all the way up that the collar sometimes hangs up and then later falls down. When it falls if you just dropped powder sometimes it bumps the plastic collar that the indexing rod rides in enough that the case wobbles.

Moving on from that... The Classic Turret just isn't designed to have a dump box for ejected ammo. So this isn't a design flaw in the press from Lee. As the ejector spring pushes the case from the shell holder the arm is usually having the ejected cartridge bouncing off it or the cartridge doesn't even fall to the right into the bin. I no sooner mounted an Acro bin than took it right down in favor of a larger plastic bin. I was about to move to a large bucket when I decided this thing just isn't working out. It didn't help any that once again because this press isn't made for a dump bin that the arm pretty much means the bin has to be over an inch away from the press and the arm means you can't really fabricate a chute for the ejected cartridge.

Maybe this will work for some people but it just isn't working for me. Even when it was working a few cartridges in a row I can't really say it was saving very much time. But bottom line it introduced problems that this press doesn't normally ever have.

Nice video-left a comment.

Thanks a whole bunch Bob for the time to check this ejector out for us-sorry it didn't work.

Jim

The video is just to show how well it can work by itself. It's a good machine capable of making good ammo at a decent rate of speed for the cost involved.

When the LCTurret gets here I'm gonna try this one on it, seems easy enough (video link below). Saw on on eBay for 75 bucks - total package. I think I can bend a piece of metal and screw it down etc etc.

Might work one up sooner for the RCBS Jr3 I is now working and just got as a freebeeeeee :)

Still need to get parts :(

So what do you think Bob, might work pretty well.

RCBS Case Kicker - I bet you could fab this up for the LCT and not use that spring eject.
