I am setting up for reloading 45 Long Colt. Lee has the separate taper crimp die and the roll crimp die available. Does anyone have experience and/or recommendations as to which to use?

All their revolver dies sets come with ROLL crimp. The only time you may want to taper crimp is if you have bullets with no cannelure or crimp groove. I only shoot lead in 45 Colt so it's roll crimp for me.

Whatever you plan to shoot them out of slug the throats, lot of sizing issues with 45C guns. Beware if you the FCD of it swaging bullet diameter. You probably are already aware though.

Like said above, dies meant for loading revolver ammo will ship with a roll crimp die and those meant for ammo shot in a semi-auto will ship with a taper crimp die.

The Lee .45 Colt Carbide 3 die set and the 4 die .45 Colt set with a Factory Crimp die will both apply a roll crimp to the case. With the 3 die set the crimp is applied with the seating die and with the 4 die set the crimp is applies in a separate operation with that FCD.

Lee Tamper Crimp Die # 90786

I have the Lee 45 Colt 4 die FCD set & use it for bullets with cannelures. I did buy the Lee Taper Crimp 45 Colt die (#90786) for use with non-cannelure (ACP) bullets & am not happy with it. Even though it's supposed the be a tamper crimp die, it definitely has a visible ridge in it & it definitely rolls the case mouth in. I sent a email to Lee & complained & they said they pulled one from the shelf & it was correct & to send mine back, with a "crimped" bullet for review. They kinda sounded like I don't know the difference so I didn't mess with it any more. What I do when I need a tamper crimp on a 45 Colt or Casull case, I switch the crimp (tamper) plug from inside my Lee 45ACP FCD to the 45 Colt FCD. Conversely, when I want to use a bullet with a cannelure in a 45 Auto Rim case, I put the 45 Colt FCD crimp (roll) plug, along with a copper bushing spacer, in the Lee 45ACP FCD so I can roll crimp my 45 ARs.

Great information. Thanks to all. Never considered switching die parts. Nice move.
