A small gunshop close to my house had a Third Model .38 Double Action in their display case with a price of $149 on it. I found the gun to be tight with a mint bore and everything worked perfectly on it. The nickel was very worn, flaked, speckled, and pitted. I noted the serial number and went home to look it up in the SCSW3.
According to the s.n. the gun was made between 1884-1895. I bought it for $139. Pretty cheap for a functional gun that's well over 100 years old.
I got the letter today and (in just three days to be exact), the little breaktop S&W will celebrate its 122nd birthday. I might just have to bake a cake!
I must say that this is the most "fun" gun I've shot in long, long time. Another shooter at the range saw my groups and could not believe they came from this old Smith & Wesson I was shooting.
