Letter "T" stamp on 1006 frame?

I don't why i never noticed this sooner (Maybe just having too much fun shooting) but my 1006 has what appears to be an upside down letter "T" or a number "1" stamped on the left side of the trigger guard, up high right at the base of the frame. I was wondering if there is any signifigance to this?

There was some talk sometime back about this but it is common on most of the 1006 pistols. I can't seem to find the info at the moment.

Not really too concerned about it was just kinda curious, sat down to clean earlier today and thought this would be a good place to ask about it. Had a couple nice days earlier this week here in WI and even managed to get out to the range, what a way to cure the mid-winter blues, but I'm paying for it now, 2-5 inches of snow and windchills below zero. Per Roy Jinks (S&W Historian): "The mark on the left front of the trigger guard is Smith & Wesson proof firing marking." This was his response to me when asking about the same mark on my FBI 1076 via a factory letter request.

begs the question why wouldn't it be there? there's one on the NIB 1006 I just picked up.

I checked some of my 2nd and 3rd generation pistols and here's what I found.

1. T-type marking on front trigger guard: 1006, 1066, 4566 & 4516-1

2. T-type marking on bottom of frame near magazine well: 645, 1076, 4576, 4006, 5903

3. No T-type marking found (might be under grip): 4506-1, 4516-2, 4013, 4014,

I didn't check all my 3rd generations, but IIRC, when I had the grips off of the pistols, I saw some that had the T-type marking near the bottom of the frame under the grip. It also appears the T-type marking is clearly visible on pistols made in or before 1995. So, if you look at the trigger guard and bottom of the frame of you pre-1995 pistol, you should see the T-type marking without removing the grip.

I knew that the "P" on the bottom of the barrels was a pressure proof mark.

I never understood why they made the "T" making on the trigger guard which defaces the appearance somewhat. It would seem they could have done this more discretely. The "T" marking must have been in addition to pressure/proof barrel testing.
