Saddened that my LGS/PAWN SHOP is going out of business. Difficult times for a LGS in a very poor rural area.

I found my Walther P5 and S&W M64 at the store and it served as my FFL for gun transfers($20). I will miss stopping in to browse the gun cases.

Oh well, now it will be a longer drive to visit a LGS.

I have bought lots of small/odd lot reloading supplies and equipment from closing stores. Partial boxes of bullets and brass, long discontinued primers and tools, even oddball ammo for wildcats I never knew existed! In their very last days, make an offer. It is easier to sell, then pack it up!

Couple of the Pawn Shop/FFL's have closed up around the area.. 2 the couple retired and the kids didn't want to do the store with out an FFL no guns .. couple more because of the area being re-developed ..

The big box stores is all that's left .. the couple of pawn stores left have little in the way of guns and all are way over priced ..

It is sad when a pawn shop - designed to help poor folks make ends meet - goes out of business in their area; presumably because they have no more business

The economics against the small shops may very well disarm the populace quicker than any legislation ever could. Think about it. Now we order on line and have it shipped to the local FFL. Down here in Louisiana we have VERY FEW shops that specialize in firearms. To my knowledge after Custom Gun in Lafayette closed there is currently no dedicated gunsmithing operation that I am aware of. If I want to buy a gun my choices are Academy, Dicks, Lafayette Shooters( LIST PRICE), Cajun Gun(LIST PRICE) or Daves. (There is Barney's I know but they are police supply) None of those places to my knowledge has a gunsmith that is versed in anything other than black guns. I've got my local FFL's to accept shipments but refuse to use the stores as the last time I did so, I didn't ask before hand and got charged $80 !! I'm lucky that I live in Louisiana with good gun ownership rights, but what happens if the feds ban internet sales and the political climate forces the big stores to quit carrying firearms? Woe is me :(

I am fearful you just may be correct as more and more small LGS and pawn shops are closing across the country...This may be a portents of the future in gun buying....So over the next year I will add to my stash with a few I wish to have just in case

Man ! I love sarcasm when it is so subtle like this....we surely do need a special button to let the poster know how much some of us appreciate ......"Oh wait,.....you did mean to,.....uh, never mind". :D

Gun shops closing and new ones opening up is a constant up here in moonbat Massachusetts. The turnover rate seems awfully high. But you can almost predict which of the smaller shops are going to make it (at least short-term) and which ones are in week-to-week, month-to-month borderline trouble... a very important thing if you use dealer consignment for the sale of guns you no longer desire. Even then, I only place one gun at a time with any given dealer... just in case. :o

I live in a town of less than 10K people. There used to be two LGS in this town. Now there are over a a dozen, 1/3 are pawn shops and of course, the Wal Mart. Tough to make a living in good times, which right now is not. Joe

If you read enough gun forums,
the gun buying public wants this.

Go to the internet for your guns and
other toys.

Besides the local guy is always a gouger.

internet gun sales have a larger buying public then LGS .. When a store like BUD's offers the same pistol a LGS has at a price well below even with FFL costs most people will buy online .. but with volume they can afford to sell at the lower prices ..

I bought an AR15 last year over 150 dollars cheaper on line then the local stores around me .. my Legion P229 was 200 cheaper .. Where would you buy it ?? I try to shop locally as much as possible but with difference of that much ..

My local farm store has better buys then the big box stores ..

I have shopped pawn shops for 35 years/
I have purchased several guns, but,,, NEVER a tool.
Who buys those tools? Worn out junk at 90%+ of retail.
In many cases you can get new for less than pawn-resell price.

I do not understand,, maybe the pawn guy is a hoarder? and he just loves having junk around him.

I will not miss one pawn shop.

Interesting. Here's the ATF's FFL count from May 2011 through September (1105–1709). It shows growth. List dates reflect when I downloaded the complete lists.

In my experience, here in Northeast Pennsylvania, there seems to be a vast number of smaller shops competing for business. However, It is a very gun friendly area (Kahr Arms is currently moving their business here from NY) and the economy is growing.

I was getting worried about there being an actually strategy of the anti-gunners in government to wait for the current generation of gun shop owners to die or retire. Happily I am seeing new shops coming into being with comparatively young owners. One day I came across a new shop in my old college town that a younger couple opened up. First time in I walk out with a beautiful nickeled Beretta Compact 92. I usually get a can of powder each time I pass through that town. Their powder prices and selection are pretty good and I can always use more powder. I like to leave a little money with them every time I'm there as a show of support.

After Vegas I'm leaning the same direction as you .. Don't trust anyone in office to do what they said they would .. That's been proven through history of our government .. A couple more this year and next .. I will doubled my normal expenditure for the next several years .. Another safe might be in the cards too ..

But how many FFL's have closed but the license is still valid but is not being used ???

Our passing of SB 941 in Oregon two years ago really put the brakes on private, FTF sales due to it's requirement of having to transfer through an FFL. I suspect however FTF sales are still being transacted between friends, family and those whe are simply not aware of the law. Most LEO agencies have publicly stated enforcement of the bill will NOT be a priority to downright refusal to enforce it. Regardless it has really affected how most of us now go about out 'gun hobby' in that we have to be very specific about what we want and what we pay as the time and transfer fees are now a consideration in any private transaction. Virtually ZERO LGSs/FFLs came out AGAINST the bill as they have all to gain both with the transfer fees (which vary but average about $35.00) and the increase in their 'in store' sales for those not wanting to deal with the hassle of a private transfer.

but what happens if the feds ban internet sales

As long as it is still legal to buy and sell guns I do not see how "the feds could ban internet sales" without violating the First Amendment.

That said, in the same way the Feds presently require all sales of prescription drugs to go through a licensed pharmacist and the feds could ban delivery directly to the home, the Feds could require all sales of firearms and ammunition to go face to face through an FFL.
