Swapped out the barrel on my 686 today. Installed a 4 inch Mountain Gun tapered barrel in place of the 4 inch heavy barrel. I know this might not be for everyone but I mostly collect pre war S&W's and love this barrel with the thin rib, etc...Still love the newer guns too but to me they are more like the workhorse of the S&W revolvers and the older guns feel more like works of art, both are awesome revolvers. Check it out and let me know what you think. I still need to install the pin in the end of the shroud for the ejector rod.

Looks good. I keep looking at my 2.5" 686 and wondering how difficult it would be to mill the underlug and shape it to resemble the sexier K-frame lug and create what would essentially be an up-sized Combat Magnum.

If only someone at Smith and Wesson would see this and put it into production.

Sir you did a great job on the conversion.

Thanks guys! Will be shooting it tomorrow. These grips are some of my favorite original S&W grips, smooth presentation Rosewood, much older than the gun.

I actually have three barrels for this gun now. One original 4 inch heavy barrel, one modified 4 inch heavy barrel and the one in the gun. the midified barrel I am going to reshape it so it has a longer than original ejector shroud, think it will look cool when finished.

You mean longer than the Mtn Gun shroud but not full barrel length?

I like it! Looking forward to a range report. Now my wheels are turning on yet another project. Oh well.
