The article I read this morning said suffocated. I find it much more plausible that he strangled the cat since they were face to face and the response might be as close to instinctive as there is.

Due to injuries, I don't run anymore, but I never liked running in places were there could be truly hostile critters, whether the woods or urban jungles. I also see a staggering number of people who exercise outside who are wearing earbuds or even the noise cancelling headphones. The stupidity of doing such leads to me to hope for a Darwinian outcome, since I am sure that they are the same snowflakes who would whine about getting appropriate verbal feedback (think Ermey) or some serious wall to wall counseling. Might as well hope we cleanse the pool before they spawn and just drive on.

I've read that in the event you are in a fight for your life with a large dog if nothing else works you should shove your arm as far into its throat as you can and hang on to suffocate it. Not planning to test the theory.

It's been tested, by an American scientist in Africa, with a leopard. It worked. Left him a little the worse for wear, though.

Look up Carl Akeley.

Knife against cougar. A Mr. Anderson on Vancouver Island. Attacked from behind. Used a Schrade LB-7 lockback folding knife, much like a Buck Model 110. I talked with him personally and wrote an article about this. He and several other cougar attack survivors were later on Discovery TV, telling their experiences.

Lion, African. A REAL lion, not a cougar. Knife used was by I. Wilson, a UK maker, six-inch blade. Look up Harry Wolhuter, in Kruger Natl. Park, South Africa, 1903.

In all cases, the human suffered extensive injuries. Wolhuter lost part of the function of one shoulder and arm. Anderson lost an eye and had to have his scalp reattached and had other injuries. He told me that getting the knife out and opening it was hard, with the cat after his throat. (He cut her throat.)

I really don't think one should be afoot in cougar or bear country unarmed, but sometimes laws preclude that.

It's a far more likely scenario.

Carl A. was a big man and that cat weighed about 80 lbs., if memory serves.

A really big leopard can exceed 200 lbs. and he would probably not have survived an attack by one that size.

One has to be aware of the surroundings. I caught this Preadator waiting to jump me coming to the dinner table with a full plate to attack me and steal my food. I diverted the attack with my laser pointer.

I always take a laser pointer along when I'm in lion country. Far better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it!

This is true. It is also true that here in Colorado people are building their dream homes right in the middle of lion country.

Where there are deer in the neighborhood there will be lions in the neighborhood. I have lived in Colorado most of my life, and I have seen at least a dozen mountain lions (more frequently in recent years). At least half of the lions I have personally seen have been in residential areas.

I lived and worked in the Ft. Collins area in the 1978 to 1999. pets have been lunch for a lot of predators along the front range for a long time. if you want to build a house on the front range be prepared to lose a few pets

I like what Colorado's governor said about the incident after reports that the runner killed the cat with his bare hands:

"Don't mess with Colorado trail runners."

He also added, "This guy should never have to buy a beer again."

I'd spring for one just to hear him tell the story!
