Since joining this forum, I have somehow become a 4" stainless Magnum no-dash snob. You guys are a bad influence, and I thank you all. :)

I'm trying to figure out which models I am missing. So far, I have assembled this small collection.

66 K frame .357 Magnum with stainless sights.
66 K frame .357 Magnum with red ramp sights.
681 L frame .357 Magnum with fixed sights.
686 L frame .357 Magnum with target sights.
657 N frame .41 Magnum with red ramp sights.
629 N frame .44 Magnum pinned & recessed.

Others that I know about & hoping to find a good deal on someday....

651 J frame .22 Magnum "Kit Gun"
CS-1 L frame .357 Magnum
EDIT: thanks k22fan
631 J frame .32 H&R Magnum adjustable sights, red ramp & white outline

I'm sure there are other models that I'm forgetting about or never even heard of. What are they? Stainless no-dash 4" barrel Magnum calibers only PLEASE!

You could consider a CS-1 different enough from a square butt 686 to collect both.

two-bit cowboy has a good point. You best not let your wife see this thread. She might learn to turn her nose up over dash Niners.

If the revolver must be a no dash you are limiting yourself.

4" barrels were not necessarily offered at the time of initial introduction of the firearm.

For example, all 274 of the no dash 627s are 5 1/2" barrels.

Also the 625 was introduced as a -2, not a no dash and not offered in a 4" until -3

However I see that you make an exception for the CS-1 variation which was a -2 or -3 686 depending on when it was produced.

Of the stainless no dash 4" Magnum revolvers all of the ones I can think of have been mentioned

You forgot a couple of zeros. Even if they had been 4" the early 627-0s would not have been satisfactory because they have a dash number, zero. Also you left a zero off the number produced. I wondered about CS-1 dashes but it was too late to dig mine out.

No I did not forget any zeros. My number was off by 16 since I relied on my memory instead of my notes.

The very first 627 was product code 101024. A total of 5272 were produced. These were introduced as a 627 no dash. S&W learned very early that the the mass of the unfluted 357 Magnum cylinder was rapidly peeing the stop notches.

The -0 engineering revision changed the design to a larger bolt and corresponding stop notches to resolve the problem.

Only 274 no dashes were built. The remaining 4998 product code 101024 was manufactured starting with the -0 engineering revision and running through to the -2 engineering revision.

The -0 just happens to be the most commonly seen example of product code 101024. The -2 is the rarest and it is unknown which of the -1 or the no dash are numbers 2 and 3 in scarcity

How about the Model 69?

EDIT: S&W website shows a barrel length of 4.25"

It's kind of strange that the Model 65 was introduced as the 65-1.

Not really. The Model 65-1 was the new .357 Magnum version of the Model 64. It was introduced in 1972 with the heavy barrel only, so it was labeled to be consistent with the Model 64-1, which was also introduced in 1972 as the heavy barrel version of the Model 64.

A similar thing happened with the Model 13. It was introduced as a magnum version of the Model 10-6. It was introduced as a 3 screw gun, so it got the -1 immediately. There was never a Model 13 with no dash number.

I've got to say, this topic is more confusing than I thought it would be! New models introduced as -1?? No dashes built, then making an engineering change & making the new iteration a -0?!?? Wow...

But I'm learning here & I very much appreciate your posts. Thanks fellas. :)

Are those MIM & IL guns? Just wondering.
Yup. MIM, internal lock, ECM rifling, and "two piece barrels." Actually they have a completely round barrel with a flange around the muzzle that Presses the sleeve against the frame. The sleeve, which includes the sights and ejector rod shroud, is keyed into the frame so it can not rotate. All those are hideously untraditional modernizations unless like a few members here you are getting tiny 50 yard groups with yours.

Okay thanks. Not really what I'm wanting for my collection.
