I just purchsed a new 9MM Shield and am having a difficult time loading the magazines. I can barely get 8 in the extended mag and if I force 7 in the other mag the mag won't fit. Is this a magazine issue or dumb operator issue? Never had this problem on any pistol. Any help is appreciated before I head back to where I purchased.

UPLULA!!!!!!!!!!!!

No need to say anymore. Just buy yourself one of those and you will never have another loading problem.

Leave the Mag loaded for an extended period of time, this will relax the spring and make it somewha easier to load. As far as loading a full mag into the pistol, try locking the slide back, then load the mag into the pistol and see if that helps you out. Pistol just needs to break in and loosen up a little.

I just logged in to pose the very same question! It is almost impossible to load the last round in both the 7 & 8. Mine have been under constant tension since last August.

The magazines are hard to load. Using UpLula will make it easier to get all the rounds in. In addition, you will find with the slide closed and a fully load magazine very tight/hard to insert into the gun. Reason being there is minimal space left to compress in the magazine upon insertion. With time, the magazine will loosen up some (mine hasn't loosen much, I just use my UpLula). Some have posted that they just download by one round. Myself, I just smack into the gun knowing that it is going to be tight.

I used my speed loader and that works....just a super strong spring. Thanks for the input.

^ This. Plus IMHO there is also some technique involved in loading which will improve with practice. My sister hada lot of difficulty with loading mags initially but after a few days of practice (and a sore thumb) she got good at it. Some of it was the mag springs loosening up but mostly it was her learning how to load it.

Never had a problem loading my mags, even when new, but then I've always been able to load Greasegun mags without a loading tool. It really is a matter of technique!

Echoing the others - buy an Uplula. And when you load the magazine in the gun, spank her like she's been naughty!

Same here.......no issues. I have had my Shield a bit over a month now. The magazines were a little tight in the very beginning but no problems loading.

If you take apart the mag, the follower has some legs on it. Some have cut or filed these down a little and they load easier.

Maglula is you best friend too.

As already said, slam the loaded mag into the gun. You are not going to hurt anything.

I found my old Glock mags, when new, harder to load than the Shield magazines! No problems loading them to capacity here...The loaded magazines do fit the gun rather tight, but are loosening up as I pass the 300 round mark...

I don't know about the UpLula since I don't have one, but your problems match mine exactly with my 9c. I find the first round difficult to load as well as #12, and with a full mag and a closed slide, you have to give the base of the mag a bit stronger of a rap to get it seated. Like bmyers, I just contribute this to a brand new gun that hasn't seen a lot of range action yet.

The last round is often a problem, especially so for those of us who experience occasional aches and pains or arthritic symptoms brought on by decades of shooting big boomers like Model 29s and such. :)

Two issues come to mind on magazines and loading issues: (1) inserting the loaded magazine into the pistol with the slide closed; and, (2) getting the last or last few rounds into the magazine.

As to issue (1), with a double stack, often a full magazine is very difficult to insert into the pistol if the slide is closed, always a possibility in a match or gunfight. On such pistols, I load all mags one round down, so that any can be easily inserted and fully seated when the slide is closed. This is a case by case basis and fully depends on how each pistol "feels."

As to issue (2), either use the magazine loader provided, or better yet, get the UPLULA, which operates on most auto pistols.

I used to make a big deal about being able to load all of my mags, even high caps, by hand.

Now, there are days. . . .

I have found that the UPLULA allows me to load all mags faster, so it is a no brainer.

Am I compensating? Yes. Will I have an UPLULA in a gun fight? No. On the other hand, why make my range experience miserable, especially on freezing cold days when the pain seems to be worse.

+1 on loading your magazines 1 round down. I know the Shields are already low capacity, but the gun will load more easily and will have fewer malfunctions.

I have the same problem with my new mp40c. I will say it seems to get easier every time I load the mag. Also as someone stated above it mag will pop in the gun very easy with the slid locked open.

The mags were noticeably tight the first time I loaded them. They loosened up considerably after running a hundred rounds through the gun the first day at the range.

I'm thinking that the problem was more internal friction of new parts rather than high spring tension.

When inserting a full mag into a closed slide, I instructed my fiancé to slam it in there, then give the bottom of the grip an extra SMACK to be sure. Works every time, won't hurt anything.

Also +1 for the uplula
