Visited one of the larger local gun stores today. They have 3 sizeable retail outlets in the Columbus Ohio area. Ammo was available in most calibers but double, triple even quadruple the prices we used to pay. It wasn't flying off the shelves, but there were buyers.

55 grain 223 at $24.99 for a box of 20.
50 subsonic CCI 22LR were $24.
100 CCI HP $24 per hundred.
9MM WW $29 per 50

There were some Hornady bullets in .38, .45 and .44 at about $30 per hundred.
2 lbs of powder I didn't recognize and don't recall the price.
0 primers of course.

Seems that supply is coming back, but prices are still sky high. 50 subsonic CCI 22LR were $24.

I will continue to ride it out with what I have.

I thought the stores around my area were high, but $24 for 100 22’s is ridiculous, RWS ammo costs that much.

Let it sit, they’ll comedown eventually.

Yup, when the stores start worrying about being stuck with a lot of stock when the invoice is due they will bring the prices down to something more acceptable. (IMO of course)but

I have plenty and won't buy at those prices. I was just really surprised that they were that high.

I believe they have more, but only put out a portion of it to give the impression that there is less availability. The bare shelves make an impression.

When I look on-line where they show the numbers in stock they seem to be growing.

The folks that are buying just don't have any reference point, they bought a gun they want to shoot it and have a box or two at home for SD, which I can understand.

Question for the OP?

Being originally from near that neck-o-the-woods I am interested in what "large local gun store" has three "sizeable retail outlets in the Columbus Ohio area": please elaborate?

If it is a national retailer (i.e., like a Cabelas, Sportsman's, etc.) those quoted prices are WAY, way unreasonable IMHO! Perhaps even predatory!

Jus' wonderin'...?

Cheers!

funny if you try to sell a generator after a storm you can get in trouble for price gouging, but they will let ammo be sold at any price.

My guess is Vance Outdoors.

Wow, local wally world gets CCI standard velocity in every week or so, $4.85 / 50. GT Distributors in JAX has several brands of 5.56/.223 for less than $15. We will all remember who was/is ripping us off.

Those prices are way above what I'm paying at our local Rural King just north of Columbus. Don't know where you are in Columbus, but I know that there's a RK store in Heath. You should check them out.

Yup happening here too. Some places have normal prices and others are riding the wave.
Just tells you who you should buy from.

My observations as well. Most retailers out west are closer to normal for 9 and 223/5.56, but still high for 40, 45 38, 357 and rifle cartridges that aren't 30-30, 270 Win and 30-06.

In our area, (upstate NY), I see 22lr anywhere from $5.99 to $10.99 a box of 50; 38 Spl and 357 Mag are nowhere to be found, and rifle shells, (6.5, 30-30, 308 etc), are roughly $2.50 apiece. Shotgun shells range form $12.95 for target loads to $19.95 for hunting loads for a box of 25, and deer slugs are $15.00 for a box of five. 9mm are now down to $30.00 for 50.
I am still holding off but will be in crisis by the end of summer.

prices are high in the burgh area. seeing mostly shotgun ammo in a few stores that i checked, also high. like others, let the ammo sit on the shelves and get dusty.

Stormin - sent you a PM- Others on the forum made a pretty good guess already.

Jag - I have been to RK in Hebron. Ironically, I am in Pataskala, and we used to buy corn for our feeders there - everything reasonably priced. Does your RK carry reloading supplies >

I see more ammo in stock around here. Have not paid much attention to prices as I have loaded for anything I shoot for years and didn't keep up with the prices before the shortage. I have seen a few primers at crazy prices and powder that was marked up a little but not terrible. I had stocked up so have not had to buy any thank goodness.

Well now the Christmas is over and the gifts unwrapped........

I can now mention that my two gift cards to Cabela's for a total of $125
did not go for high priced ammo or reloading stuff.........

instead, it went to a two pistol, gun safe, for one of the young ladies in our family. Finally took two years but I finally found something, price wise, that I liked or agreeded on the price markings.

Hoping for a better new year...........

I hit a LGS about a week ago looking for a lever rifle. Not a single one in the store but long racks of AR's and bolt rifles. I just happened to walk by the reloading supplies and the only brass they had was 30-30 and they had plenty of it. I guess nobody loads 30-30 anymore. I didn't look at ammo prices but they've been competitive with on-line prices in the past when they can get it.
