I have a 940 with extraction problems. One school of thought is to hone the chambers. I don't know what to do and thought it best to send it to S&W. I assume they do whatever in terms of gunsmithing. Or, should I find a good local gunsmith? The problem with the local gunsmith would be confirming his/her competency before any work was done.

You are absolutely correct, about the local gunsmiths. I have been burned a couple of times, over guys that everyone says is a wonderful gunsmith. Now I only do business with nationally known gunsmiths, with a solid reputation.
