Flying the American flag is a very low priority at the local post office. It sometimes doesn't get flown, other times it's not taken down and flies through the night without illumination.
When I've said something to the postal clerk I've received answers like it's raining out, or we are busy.
Today I finally had my fill, I called my Senator's office and explained the situation. Hopefully some good will come of this phone call.

Intent?

There are all sorts of rules regarding the flag. It's a matter of whether or not somebody intended to disrespect it. I find myself leaving up all night without illumination as if I had to fly the flag and take it down each day, I probably wouldn't bother.

A flag should not ever touch the ground and if a flag is to be discarded, the stars should first be separated from the stripes. Most of my neighbors who fly the flag leave them up all night.

That is the right thing to do....

If these things go unreported, don't expect anything to change. This is a matter of management within the local post office itself. In the interest of getting mail and a lot of packages out, if they do this and raise no alarms financially they are allowed to continue the status quo. And the attitudes of the postmaster is reflected in that of the other personnel.

I was standing in the post office one, in line with around 5 other people. It was a very small area, so you could hear the conversation taking place between the postal employee and the little old lady at the counter. When the little old lady asked what the safest way to ship her fragile item, I couldn't resist saying out loud: UPS. The folks in line broke out in laughter while the postal employees stared daggers at me.

That's my post office story. :)

Certainly hope you weren't there to mail anything. I would bet it didn't get out of the post office much less to the intended destination. hardcase60

Hopefully there will come a time in the near future when we can re-establish respect in OUR country; and along with it, a little more respect for it's most iconic symbol. Most especially in tax supported entities. (Yeah, I know the USP is supposedly making it's own money)

There is nothing about "free speech" that should allow the desecration of the American flag like has happened.

The local wal-mart here had a flag that had come loose on on end and was wrapped around the pole. My wife was working there back then and I called the store and told them that they needed to fix it. They didn't, so I called them again and told them that if they don't get it right then I will climb up there and do it my self. I also added that if they wanted me to I could find a Chinese flag and put it up below the American one. They came out a couple of minutes later and put up a new flag. I find that somewhat irritating.
Peace,
Gordon

I haven't been by the post office in weeks. Went there today to mail some Christmas stuff. Place was packed; I was 11th in line and it moved slow because one person was getting a passport and the other window was occupied by a huge stack of letters each of which required some attention.

I had noticed the flag was at half staff, so when I got to the window I asked why. The operator didn't know. I don't know if they flew it at half staff for December 7th and never moved it, or if it was left over from November 11th. I have to go there Monday, I'll see what it's like then.

I drive right past my local PO to go to the U** Store. I can continue to carry inside and I get better service.

There are only 1200 people in our community. We have one little post office that not only takes care of the mail, but is a source of community news with a bulletin board and an ample venue for all the locals to gather and chat about everything from hay crops to weather. During the late summer, there's also a large cardboard box there where folks can put their extra garden produce for those less fortunate who can use it.

Our post master, Kevin, is so conservative that he makes Rush Limbaugh look like a liberal. He makes sure that our flag is flying correctly everyday. When it is supposed to be flown at half mast, it is flown at half mast. And it is brilliantly illuminated every night.

I guess I'm so naive that I just thought all post offices operated that way in regards to flying the flag. I'm glad you called your senator. Let's hope someone gets the message...loud and clear.

Thats a sad looking post office hopefully it will get better after jan 20

Here in rural flyover country there is a consolidation of smaller post offices into the one larger town around post office. Some of the smaller ones are not much larger than a closet, and just hanging on waiting for the axe to fall. Often the postmaster is an elderly lady who has been there forever, and the only help is one or two rural carriers who are surviving also. They try, but there doesn't appear to be much help from ¿corporate? except criticism and number crunching the dwindling numbers. Don't think that a big city businessman or anyone from big city life will be interested in rural small town issues.
Rural versus city life is another division in which the gap is growing! 😞

Most likely at half mast for the death of John Glen.

They need to hire better People.
I had a service call one day to one of the main hub's and while I was walking to the loading dock I saw letters just laying in the mud and puddles that nobody seemed to care anything about,I brought it to the head mans attention and that's all I was able to do so not flying the Flag is the least of their problems.
