I bought a shield-40 like it a lot, but could someone please tell me why my slide will not lock back without a mag inserted ?

That's how it's designed. To lock the slide back with no mag, just push up on the slide lock as you rack the slide.

that's what i thought too , but slide lock will not move up into locked position, maybe i am getting too old or gun too new , but thanks for the come back

Don't have an answer but checked mine. Works as designed. It should lock when pulling slide back while pushing up slide lock.

If it locks back with an empty mag inserted, it will lock back without the mag, by manually pushing the slide lock lever up, with the slide fully racked back. The issue may be that you are not getting the slide fully racked back. You need to fully rack the slide back, push the lever up and keep it held up, and then allow the slide to move forward, against the lever. You should then be able release the upwards pressure on the slide lock lever, and the slide will be locked back.

It helps to have three hands. If you have limited hand strength, use the mag to lock it back. Admittedly, the small tab on the lever is much more difficult to manipulate than the slide lock on a 1911.
