Lock key question

Greetings! Personally, I abhor the lock hole in the current S&W revolvers, but I have fallen for the 3" 686+ and the 629. Hopefully, my not so instant NICS check will be completed soon so I can bring home my new 3" 629.

My question: are the keys for the locks completely interchangeable, or are they unique to each handgun or frame size?

Not asking in order to give the Mother Ship any ideas!

The key is the same for all models. Looks like a small hex head wrench as I recall.

One size fits all. I looked at mind closely and it's pentagonal. Personally, I'm honored to own revolvers with a feature named after the 1st person to climb Mt. Everest.

Thanks, never looked at one closely. It makes sense though, there seems to be a lot of (wait for it, wait for it) “pent up” emotions over the lock.

S&W will send you a key if you loose yours FOC. If you never lock it you will never use it. I'm not sure where my key is. I would have to go thru my parts drawer to find it. I've had my 625-8 for 10 years and never used it, but the gun stays in my safe or with me.

When I bought my model 69, I wanted an extra key to put on my key ring. I sent s&w an email saying I would like an extra key. Never did ask them to send me one, just that I wanted one. Two weeks later, one arrived in the mail.

I've never used the key but it gives me peace of mind to have it with me at all times in case my or someone else's revolver needs unlocking.

My new 686+ came with 2 keys. They are both still in the little ziploc bag in the blue box. And there they'll stay.

I will stay chaste on this one...I learned my lessons the hard way too many times with infractions over infractions. Not this time...a safety device it is for today which I don't know of any men using it.

I keep a key in the gun rug I use when I take the 686-6 to the range. Haven't needed it yet.
