Lock

I bought my first gun a few weeks ago. It had a little key which operated a lock by the cylinder release lever. I did not like this feature in case the key was lost, and hid the key.
Since then I found this forum which is full of useful information. And I see some posts comparing the lock on my gun to (edited).
This was disturbing, and after reading the Stickies where it says to not "spew your hatred for the internal lock", it seems to be unacceptable.
There may be many newbies like me now coming into the gun fold. What is this forum's policy on this term for the lock?

Welcome Vintage! The lock is a divisive topic and inherently controversial. The culture here is family friendly and strictly rated G. The anti-lock people can be pretty passionate, but most of us do not care. I would not worry about having a lock (there is one on my carry gun), but if it bothers you; you can have it removed and/or covered - just research existing internal lock posts for any information that you want. We have exhausted the topic. I hope you enjoy your new gun. Do not take it personal if this thread is locked.

I’ve heard the lock referred to as a bellybutton or (edited), but nothing with such anatomical specificity.

In answer to what appears to be your question- that terminology wouldn't be appreciated and would probably get you dinged. Many here don't care for the lock but many do. Welcome to the forum and enjoy your new gun!

I don't like the lock but I simply choose to ignore it. I keep the key in the box the gun came it and have never even tried to use it. To me it's just another unnecessary government regulation. I focus on what my revolver was made for "Shooting".

Take the key, place it in the original box, and store it away for the future. Internal lock, the Clinton lock, the (edited), these terms have all been used without much abuse from the staff or other members here. As to the lock itself, it should not be an issue. If you find it too great an annoyance, have it removed or move the firearm on down the line and get something without the lock. What firearm did you buy? From that we may be able to make some suggestions such as a 442/642, older J, K, and N frame guns. Good luck and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum. This is a great forum inhabited by a lot of great people. You began by saying you bought your first gun. We were all new to guns at one time. Some of us were mere pups, others came on board later, or much later. Feel free to ask us for help as you get your oars in the water. There is much to learn here - as much as you want. As a point of reference, I own many Smith and Wesson revolvers. Only one has the lock. They are all outstanding revolvers. Including the one with the lock (686+).

On a separate note, I have a vintage set of lawn jarts. When my family and friends visit, we have a great time playing jarts. Nobody has ever been hurt while playing with them. However, all of the sets currently available for sale have foam tips. They increase the safety of playing a lawn dart game. Although a few of my friends have purchased the foam tip darts, they often seek to purchase one of the original sets that were once available. Both the metal tip jart and the foam tip jart are a part of playing the same game. However, some people prefer the original game while others don’t mind playing with the foam jarts. Simple as that.....

It is a storage device, plain and simple. My EDC has it. Would I prefer the same Model without it? Maybe, but without winning the lottery...
