I just got this jewel back from the performance center this morning. While shooting the barrel and slide went into a locked condition. The slide will only come back about 1/4 inch and the slide will not move back on the barrel. If there is a loaded shell in the camber, It will not fire when the hammer drops. I have 3.5 inches down the barrel until I bottom. Can anyone shed some light on what is going on here. I would at least like to know if I have a potentially live round in the chamber before I send it back.

A couple questions:

1. Were you shooting reloads?
2. Did you experience a malfunction shortly before the slide locked, such as a round that appeared not to fire?
3. Did a round fire and then the slide locked?

It may be that you have a bulge in the barrel that will not allow the slide to move past. If so, you probably don't have a loaded round in the barrel. To be sure, measure the distance from the muzzle to the breach face of the slide. Then run a rod down the barrel as far as it will go, mark the rod on the muzzle end, and compare the amount of rod that went down the barrel with the previous measurement. If the difference is equal to a loaded cartridge, you have a loaded round in the chamber.

Hope this helps,

KAC

3913

I was shooting reloads of 3.8 gr WIN 231 with plated 124 gr bullets. This is a very mild load, but functions well in my Beretta and Glock 34. I had fired about 18 rounds through the smith before the jam. The magazine was empty when I removed it.The only shell that appeared not to fire was when I discovered I could not pull the slide back. I put the mag back in and dropped the hammer 3 or 4 times after that with no effect. The 3913 has a 3.5 inch barrel, but I am not sure if that includes chamber. I am guessing that there is indeed a round in the pistol.

breechface measurement for 3913

Can someone give me a breechface measurement off their 3913 for comparison? I still don't know what caused this jamup, but would really like to know if that case is empty or loaded. Thanks,

Ron

how bout a mirror and flashlight to look down the bore.

just make sure the walls beyond the mirror are safe (know your background)

I couldn't make it work

I haven't been able to see the breech. I was shooting plated bullets so they ought to reflect if I could hit it right with a light. These little 9mms are not too rare if I can find someone to measure a plain 3913. I used the rod on a caliper.

You should be able to just stick a pencil down the barrel and then lay it on top of the slide to tell if there's a loaded or empty round in the camber. Either way it sounds like you have a swollen case in the camber. If it's a empty you can be a little more rough with it. Try placing the edge of the slide againest a wooden bench, table or block and push down on the frame forcing the slide back. The same will work if it's a loaded round, you just need more caution in doing so. Semi-auto barrels are measured to included the camber, so yours is 3.5".

right on

Handgunner you called it. After I got the measurement, I got braver and out she came. It was a military case and was really tight. This pistol just came back from the performance center but I am going to give that chamber a serious cleaning. Thanks, Ron

I just bought a new sigma that choked on some of my reloads that jammed the slide. All of the offending rounds would feed and fire in my M&P9c or my 3rd gen S&Ws. I checked all my reloads afterwards by dropping them into the sigma barrel since I don't have a case guage. It's chamber seems to be tighter than the other 9mms.
