Locks Will Be Phased Out Says S&W!!

S&W this morning says no truth to the rumors.
The lockless 642 & 442 may have started the rumors, but those guns were "specials" & there are apparently no plans to even keep them going, at this point.

Denis, where did you get that info? The reason I ask is that it doesn't make sense for S&W to keep the no-lock 442/642 listed as available on their web page for j-frames. It just looks to me like they intend to keep building them in these models.

My info came in an emailed response this morning to the question I sent to my regular contact at S&W who handles press samples.
I consider the source as valid as anybody at S&W.

Re the 442 & 642, I'd asked a few weeks ago if those two models were going to remain lockless long enough to do a write-up on them & was told no, by the same source.

I have no idea what the reasoning is behind them, aside from the usual occasional "leftover" frames from offshore orders.
I haven't pursued the question.

Now that you mention it, I did post the wrong thing......What I should have said is I wonder f(if all this were true) if Smith and Wesson would let me send mine back and have the lock took out and remedy that hole in the side.....

If you have a 22-4 with a side plate with lock hole, you better hold on to it as it must be one of a kind.

If they would lose the lock that would make that model 29 suddenly a very attractive purchase. What with the endurance package and all. Even without the counter bored cylinder and the pin I would have to own one and soon... Too bad..

They will never have to admit the mistake... In the shops I frequent in 5 states there is rarely a pre-IL gun on the used shelves any more...when there are none to sell newbies will have to buy IL guns or not buy a S&W revolver.

One thing we could do with all the IL guns if the dropping of the IL came to pass is ship them all to Kalifornia, NJ, Taxachusetts and all the other "Republics"...

FYI, California has no IL requirement.

I have posted this many times, here it is again. As of todays date, the ONLY STATE to mandate an internal lock is Maryland. No other.

Massachusetts does not even consider the internal lock to be a safe storage device. How ironic. Regards 18DAI.

Because they are sometimes mean and usually clueless.

Very funny comment, Allglock - but in fairness to S&W, I thought I might doctor it up a bit. Fixed it for you, as they say. Still, you made me laugh - thanks.

The dealer I purchase my firearms through told me today that Smith & Wesson is releasing a large majority of their pre-lock revolvers that were unsold prior to the change, due to the short supply and overwhelming demand that currently exists. He has heard no such rumor of them manufacturing new ones without the lock. I just laid down the cash for a new 686 this weekend, and just about had a heart attack when I saw this thread. I asked if he could obtain me a pre-lock, and he said most of the distributors arent concerned with whether they have integrated locks, theyre just concerned with whether they have guns in stock. Its pretty much a roll of the dice. My fingers are crossed, but my hopes arent up.

It looks like my hopes have been dashed. If anyone at Smith is following this thread, there are at least four revolvers I'd buy if they didn't have the lock. Oh well, I guess my bank account's still safe.

Excellent terminology!

From a liability standpoint, I think they much rather have pissed off people because the gun didn't work like it was suppose to than have lawsuits because little timmy blew his head off with a no lock gun. We all know what I said is absolutely absurd, but there is some truth in it.

Unfortunately, you are right. But, why not make the infernal lock an "option" and offer an unadulterated version to the rest of us...in the same way that there have been vehicles that meet the California Emission Standards for decades. It is the same idea. If California, Illinois, etcetra want to have more stringent regulations, then let them. Just do not allow them to set the standard and force their stupidity on the rest of us.

If Smith&Wesson gets rid of the infernal lock, it will present a real dilemma for me...which Night Guard to get first.

Although California does indeed have some very stupid gun regulations, the internal lock is not one of them !

Far too many members continue to relate the internal lock to California laws that simply do not exist! This fact has been pointed out many times over the past few years but continues to be ignored !

Many members also refuse to ship C&R guns and long guns into Califonia even though it is perfectly legal and has no restrictions. I do not understand why there is this "Let's penalize Califonia gunowners" mentality even by members of our own Forum !

Illinois has no requirements for a lock either.

My Glock purchased last year has no lock.

+1000... I too get very tired of hearing people in various venues complaining about their 2nd Amendment rights being threatened by the "gun grabbers", and then proceed to turn their backs on California gun owners, helping to do to us what they fear might happen to them... lose their ability to legally buy handguns because of anti-gun legislation.

Don't people get it??

When you refuse to sell or ship to California, not only are you playing right into the hands of anti-gun politicians by doing their dirty work for them, you are also proving how successful a particular tactic can be.

Do people think that anti-gun groups and politicians in other states aren't taking notice of California's success and taking notes?

If so, better think again... read this about Washington DC hitching their wagon to the California Handgun Roster:

I just got off the phone with Massad Ayoob and,he said who ever wrote this thread is wrong on the locks being discontinued. Massad was talking to the S&W big wigs about the problems and 3 of them said that because of some problems of the IL locks about locking up while shooting, they[bigwigs] are still talking but, havent made up their minds up yet. I also talked to S&Ws C/S person Joe about this and he said the same as Massad did to me and also said nothing right now in the works of all pistols and Revolvers with no IL locks as of yet. rich625-8 I do check this stuff out especially when it comes to internet forums like these. Sinc I am a wholesaler in the Sporting Goods position parttime.
